Don't know if anyone had done this but i have seen questions on how to get the fries to attach when using a black sponge filter in the tank. As an idea to use some spare whisper filter bags i had laying around, i took a new Whisper filter replacement filter bag cut the sealed end off and slipped over the black sponge filter, fits perfect and tight. Works perfect. Kind of like a prefilter for a sponge filter.

that seems like a great idea, even tho i'm not trying to breed discus! I have some random tetra filters lying around, i might try that, won't hurt.

I tried that on a 1st batch and ended up loosing quiet a few getting tangled in the white sock as the fibers are too course. I now just pull the sponge for few hours or so if they having problems with attachment and just leave the air on a little. Seems to work better for me and no lost fry.

Wish I'd thought to look for this a week ago. My new batch of wrigglers all attached to the sponge. I shook them off this morning and removed the sponge. I think they settled in on the silicone, but at least the parents are interested in them again. I don't know how many I have left and I hope they survive. Can't wait to get home from work and see.

That's a great idea, but looking at the diameter of the base of your sponge filter and the size of the white bag, I think you're using a fairly small sponge. I don't think that bag would fit over my filters. I read an earlier post of someone using white nylon stockings, but I've successfully used cheese cloth in the past. Glad it's working out for you.

You think you could use a sock filter for a sump and slip it over the sponge and then tie it off with butchers twine?
