Man one bad night for me week and a 1/2 ago ,did a water change wed busted a heater . Took it out of tank seemed to be dead 300 watt heater set on a nice inlaided table on a cardboard box , set there for 2 days checked it 2 or 3 times a day dead so I thought.Smoke detector woke me up on Friday at 2.30 am I had left it plugged in (dumb assre me).Fire was still smoldering when I came down stairs put it out with 5 glasses of water 1.5 feet away from fish tank .I thought for sure the fish would die ashes on lights could barely see into tank but these guys are fine still going strong. Investigator said I don't how you lived thorough this . Just remember too unplug those heaters they are deadly.

Lucky escape. We all have to be careful as water and electricity don't mix neither does cardboard and a broken heater.

I've had near disasters also. It happens when all of the many cords get tangled up behind the tank! I think I'm plugging in one thing, and I've plugged in the wrong thing!! It's happened a couple of times, but I caught it before a disaster occurred.
I hope your insurance covers your damages, and thankful that no one was hurt!!!

Holy Smoke damage! YIKES! How many hours do you think the heater was on? I'm showing this picture to my kids to show them how quickly a fire can start! Did your animal suffer any smoke damage? Did the front of the fish tank have smoke soot built up? So thankful that you were home. WOW
