I have 2 discus in a 45 gallon planted take. They are about 3-3.5" and been in this tank since August of 2012. My question is, why are they always hiding? Water is changed at 75% daily. pH is at 7 with no ammonia, 0 Nitrite, very slight reading of Nitrate. They are kept at 82F. Substrate is vacuumed at every water change. They are also picky eaters, usually only eating FDBW. They have no sign of disease, just always hiding. Any help or info would be great.

thanks,
Chuck

Probably because there are only 2 of them and they like to be in groups of at least 5 or more.
What other fish are in there? How often do u do WC? Do you age your water?

5 lemon tetras are the only other fish in the tank. Water is changed everyday, using tap water with prime.

Yep,with plants they have a place to hide, and at only 2,not always, but 99% of the time, they are more comfortabl in a small school of atleast 5.

They are just lonely. Need more to be comfortable.

You need to purchase more. They love to school and just like bill and moon said. Groups of five.

Its only good to have 2 discus in a tank when they are a breeding pair. You could raise the temp to 86 until you buy more discus, It will raise their metabolism and they may become more active and less picky eaters.

+1 on all posts! I had the same exact problem when first starting out. Only bought a couple, and they were extremely skiddish. As soon as they saw the other discus in bags not even in the aquarium yet they were coming out curiously seeing who there knew friends were. Once i had all six in the tank. they schooled and swam everywher. They ate from my hand and would eat plenty different types of food. I hope you get the same results i did.
