Whats the best time to put a screen on a cone. When you know they're done? The next day?Have a pair that has took them to wigglers and moved them, then ate them. Now the eggs make it to the second day then get et.That being said, fianally got somr RO going, and in the last week, have been getting down my tds.Have two pair that have had eggs for two days, one being the above, and a pair laying as I type.Would you let it go and see what happens with water in better parameters?

I put one on each time. The last spawn I had they laid on glass and they didn't eat them which made me scratch my head. They eat them on the cone but not on the glass. Lol

That first pair ate about half by this morning,so put one on while my tea was brewing.Second one are on the glass.Going to screen the third one in a minute when I go to feed bbs before I leave.Just when I had my first few spawns last summer, didnt screen at all.

What material do you use for your screen? Plastic or metal? What color?

I have used a product called Gutter Guard and it was black. Did not really help because as soon as the wigglers became free swimming, the parents ate them anyway, go figure.

When you guys cover the eggs are you providing extra aeriation? I have seen an air stone used where the bubbles moved past the eggs to move water over them. Last time i pointed a small power head in the direction of the cone just to keep some water flow over the eggs.

I got some of that and am trying it out, but I'm afraid that since it's black the wigglers will attach to it instead of to the parents.

Yeah Don when I went to Menards, they only had black at the time. The problem though is it needs some kind of weight added to it to keep it from floating. I tied some small pieces of river rock and fishing line.

You can also use some fine mesh stainless steel if you can find it and it won't float either.

Odd the black float but the white doesn't. Maybe different brands...

I honestly cover every time after the finish spawning. Then I get stupid or brave depending on what happens and I uncover after they become wrigglers. I use the gutter guard stuff but I really like the wire I got from Bill at Inland Empire Discus a few weeks ago.

You can see it in the picture here.

Mishka does Bill sell them as guards or just the wire? I don't remember seeing them on Bill's site.

To answer your question Bill whether to let it go or not, I am sorry I missed that. I personally would let them go and see if the RO water difference helps them or not.

Arrrg! No difference. The first pair actually pushed agaisnt the screen to get the eggs. The second pair that had laid on the side of the tank, and some eggs are gone, but I have an idea for that I'm going to try over the weekend.Third pair I put the screen on before I left for work,we'll see what happens. Also, there is aluminum gutter guard out there, sinking problem solved.

Are you kidding me!? Lol could you make a cone that is tighter around the bottoms and opens up toward the top to keep them further away? I've never seen this so I don't have much to offer but that. Lol

He just sold the wire. And the best part about it is that it cannot be pushed through and it doesn't float up or have to be tied down. I bent the rough prongs inward to grip the bottom of the cone so when I got close to the bottom it had a good grip. If you try to push it left or right it tilts the whole cone.

To wieght down the gutter guard just get some cheap zip ties and a couple of stainless steel washers. Position the cone with the eggs up against the back corner of the tank and then they can't push the guard around. Actually, plastic fencing works better than gutter guard, same stuff, the fencing is just in bigger sections so you don't have to piece it together. If your afraid about circulation you can also zip tie a piece of airline tubing to the gutter guard on the side opposite the eggs, just make sure to keep the air flow minimal.

I was reading one of Andrew Soh's books and it looked like that is what he's did/does when laid on glass.

Are you concerned about the sharp edges on metal screen? I used plastic gutter guard and even used a lighter to melt the cut ends so they weren't sharp. Guess I'm paranoid.

I havent do it yet to the above, but I take pliers and bend over the edges.

Looks like Iight get to make one of these too. Stupid female decided to lay on the glass instead of the cone. Go figure. It looked like she'd been drinking too. Eggs all over the place lol guess ill need a big one!

Thinking ill just see how many are left in four days and take it. Then they will free swim and after getting attachment they will lay again and eat the fry. Lol
