Maximum number?!?

I was just wondering, whats the maximum number of discus that can be kept in a 55 gallon tank (48"x21"x12") and whats recommended for getting a pair?? I know with angels its best to get 6 and grow them out with the usual 1-2 pairs.
I plan on taking out the 2" of white play sand and keeping it a BB tank, and adding another filter to it.

AND would a 30 gallon tank be okay for a single pair of discus?

5 in that size aquarium. You ha e the right idea to get pairs. And yea you can keep them in a 30 but I prefer a 20H or 29 that way they can make good runs up the breeding cone
