Some time ago some of you guys expressed the desire to get together and see if we could start a Discus Club I'll try to get the ball rolling.

Anyone interested in meeting at the end of February or the beginning or March? Maybe at a restaurant? Please let me know or post here so I can see where we can meet.

While I realize ya'll are just getting the club going and 2014 is still a long time away but.....if ya'll could mention the 2014 NADA show it would be great. It will be our 10th year as a club and the show will be out of this world. Also if ya'll think there is even an outside chance that ya'll would want to host the show in 2016 some of ya'll will need to attend the 2014 show so you know what is going on.

Thanks

I promise that anyone that comes will have a good time. While more info will come out as it draws closer the hotel is a 4 star and the local area is a great vacation place. Even if the rest of the family is not into fish this is an area where you can come for a week and make everyone happy.

I've got it marked down to try and make it John, not sure though between work and the wife...lol but what we should check into is possibly starting up a extended NADA branch out this way in the Los Angeles / Orange County region of California.

Well NADA is a national club but it is the local clubs that but on the show. The group doing this show is the Lone Star Discus Club. In the future maybe it is the California Club......

wonder if walter is in group meets these days cuz he sold all his discus from moving. ismael was downsizing discus. and thats all i know so far.
few guys in LA met months ago. we should do a meet in OC some day.
instead of waiting for someone, why dont those interested set a date to meet.

once my fishroom is complete then ill open up too. (probably in few months)
i know a few around me who will probably come.

I know there is good interest so far but we do need a place to meet. My place would be great for a meet physically, however, discus-wise, I have none and I think that would make for a poor host location. If anyone else in the LA area has a good location then we can start coordinating.

Agreed.

Dave, that would be a great idea, in your garage, but one thing I would mention is that during that time, towards the end of June, is when Summer starts, so I hope you have some kind of AC in there, lol.

Additionally, during the summer, many people take vacations and such. Again, just something to consider. I know I get super busy at work. I work in a luxury hotel right next to the Santa Monica boardwalk. Sometimes I work 7 days a week during that time.

Like I mentioned before though, if we set a date in advance, I can always request not to be scheduled and we can make it happen.

June wont be as bad as august or sept.
But yea heat can be an issue. We can also meet during evening time too.
I would open up sooner but garage without any fish would kinda be boring. Bill and i are gonna be done with most of build out by end of this month and but need time for cycling etc.
i will also def ask bill if he wants to come. Would be cool.
Well hope it happens.
Its sad that we got some super active reef clubs here and also great planted tank club here but not many discus enthusiats here.

Not sure if our LA people would have seen that thread but if you would be interested please let me know and we can talk logistics and such. I will get a price breakdown from Josie to see how many discus we can fit in a box to maximize our shipping.

All,

Spike Cover here (Mission Viejo in So Cal). I'd like to join/participate in a discus club but only if it is focused on what I need and want. I'm a long time fish geek (70 years) and have been interested in discus for some time. I'm now almost in a position to actually do something about discus for real so I'd like to find an association from which I can benefit. I have been involved in Koi for 20+ years and am very active with that hobby (see www.KoiOrganisationInternational.org) and have observed what makes a club work and some of the things that cause it to fail. Here's the short version: People join a hobby club for two main reasons: 1. to learn (learn is the key word) how to enjoy the hobby better and 2. to associate with others who share their interest. The thing that universally turns people off and causes clubs to fail is what is termed "politics." This generally takes the form of arguments when people want to have it all their way. If and when this creeps in, it signals the end of the club or, at the very least, the loss of members.

I've found that the purpose of a hobby club is enhancement of enjoyment and there is virtually nothing involved that's worth going to war over. So I'm interested in participating if something forms that fulfills the two needs given above and actively works to exclude politics. BTW, I'm not just a taker and would expect to be an active contributor to a club.

Please let me know if and when anything happens with regard to forming a So. Cal. discus club.

Spike

PS, here's a little, possibly applicable, blurb that you may find humorous,

There are three types of people in the world:
Those who make things happen,
Those who watch things happen, and
Those who say, "What just happened?"

Hey there Spike! Congrats on your long history with fish keeping! Also, thank for adding your piece here as I see you are a long time member of our forum as well. The thing we lack in So. Cal is direction. We have quite a few members, but no one really ready to step up and take the reigns. I have thought about doing it, but it is simply too much work to be done to try to get things in place.

Yes, I can see that no one wants to step up. I'm not inclined to volunteer to organize a club either but I would likely participate/contribute if someone else took the lead. Maybe a way to get started is to somehow (always a risky word) to collect those who would like to participate in one place (digitally), interact for a bit and see what develops. This may be a good place for that but maybe something like what used to be called a list bot (don't know if they still have such things) would be a better alternative. I really don't know. What we can conclude is that it's not working all that well here. That said, maybe there is just insufficient interest.

Spike

Another idea: Hopefully someone more tech savvy than me can put up a poll that would see what potential members want from a club. The poll could ask such questions as:
Do you prefer

a digital club or
regularly scheduled in-person meetings, or
both?
What are you willing to contribute to a club:

Follow online
Contribute online
Attend meetings
Host a meeting
Give presentations
Contribute to a newsletter
Write articles for a NL
Hopefully you get the idea.

In the koi clubs, I've found that the newbies gravitate to the information aspects and the "old timers" gravitate to the social parts of club meetings. If you don't have both aspects, you lose one group or the other. But whatever you do, if you don't work diligently to exclude bickering, you will invariably lose members and, if it gets bad enough, the club literally falls apart. I strongly suspect that these principles would apply to most hobby clubs.

In successful koi clubs that I've been involved in, there is typically a meeting once a month at a member's home, at a koi dealership or at a public location with a koi pond. There is frequently (at least 1/2 the time) a speaker that presents information directly relating to koi. There is usually also a pot-luck lunch and social time. Recently there have even been Skype presentations from knowledgeable folks not located locally. This doesn't mean that a discus club has to follow this recipe but if no one has better ideas, going with a model that's worked for others may be a good first shot.

BTW, there is at least one online koi club.

Spike

Spike Cover

I'm not willing to do the work but here's a suggestion... see attached.
I'd recommend starting any survey/poll with questions 1 thru 6. If there is sufficient interest, then move on to the rest of 'em.

Let me just point something out, when dealing with Koi as compared to discus, the following is a lot more broad reaching than that of discus. Discus tend to be a fish that many people simply do not purchase as often, for a myriad of reasons really.

Being that we are on a discus forum though, we have a lot of like-minded individuals. However, locally, we are a little more far in between. A few of us regularly talk to each other, but rarely meet. I'd be up for the idea of a local club, BUT, I believe starting slow would be the key. What I mean is, having a meet every other month or something close to that time frame. In this way, we have a chance to build up interest per meet. Additionally, the place where we meet may be a problem since I don't know many LFS's or the like that carry quality discus to sell. Which in turn would mean meeting at someone's home. Many people, such as myself, only have 1 tank and I feel it would be somewhat akward to have a meet at my place where all we have to focus on is one single tank :(.

I like your digital suggestion. I can definitely create a thread where we gauge the interest and I can make a poll. In this very thread we have had many interested to attend a meet, but time has come and gone since.

I am not trying to be pessimistic, but more of a realist as to what it may actually take to start/run/keep running a club locally.

Spike Cover
10-22-2015, 08:29 PM
I'm okay with not having a club. I just thought since there is 12 pages to this thread, there might be sufficient interest to get something started.
Again, I'm willing to participate but not to organize.
BTW, being in Koi typically takes thousands of dollars to get started (and often tens of thousands). For that reason, I thought there would be more folks in discus as I presumed it only takes hundreds of dollars to start with them. I guess I was wrong. Or maybe you think there are more Koi keepers in So Cal than there are. Don't know which.

Please let me know if anything ever comes of the So Cal discus club idea.

Spike

It isn't an "official" club. It is just a way for us SoCal people to know who is in our area. The most commotion we had was actually this past weekend with Joey coming down from Canada to do a demo at Uncle Sam's fish room.

Hi Bethany,
There seems to be posts but no action save a meeting 3 or 4 years ago. Ricardo tried to get something going, started taking names and locations of those interested but AFAIK, nothing came of it.
I'd like to know discus people as if I ever get past getting ready to get ready, I may actually get a discus tank and would love to live all the pitfalls vicariously rather that kill a bunch of discus on my learning curve.
I'm in Mission Viejo.

Ha ha!! That's funny I am thinking about starting to cycle a tank for Discus. Tong's Tropical Fish in Fountain Valley http://tongstropicalfish.net/ has the most I've seen and I think even The Reef in Anaheim has a few. Also, I think I saw some in DD Fish and Pets in Santa Ana.

But, I suspect you'd be better off buying from someone on this forum or, if you have the $s, from Kenny. He typically has killer fish for sale.
