View Full Version : What temperature do you keep your healthy discus?

During the few months that I have been here, I have seen posts with temperatures for healthy discus ranging between 26C-31C and 82F-88F. With such a variance, I thought it would be interesting to create a poll of healthy temperature preferences by current members.

Multiple choice is allowed & the poll is public, so everyone will be able to see your answers. Please keep your poll answers related to what you prefer for your healthy discus. After you answer the poll, please post your answer(s) and why you prefer that temperature.

Example: breeding at X temp compared to non-breeding at X temp, fry, juvies, etc...

Thank you & enjoy!

I currently keep my juvie discus tank at 84F because that seems to be what the majority of the posts I have read were at, plus my current discus were at that temperature when I got them.

My target temp is 82 and the discus are healthy and hungry plus it is a little easier on the power bill.

i can tell you that 106F due to stuck heater.. IS NOT GOOD!

I keep my juvi between 85 to 86 and when they get of size looking at 82. I have researched and everything reads that its better to keep juvi and higher temp. If im wrong please say, have not seen any ill effects.....

I keep mine at 84 because that's the most stable temp that my heater will keep.

88F. I've heard that juvies grow faster in warmer water. This may not be true, but they're comfortable with what it is now, so I'm not going to change it.

Is it true that if kept at higher temps - 88-89 F- it helps them acclimate to new tank? And helps with flagallates and intestinal problems if they are not eating? I was suggested to keep them around 89 for a week, this is new discus i got.

IN my opinion it is just well meaning bull ****.....The thought is it will increase metabolism but there is no need for this in most cases.

82, seems to be the golden line between discus and plants. Any lower would be bad for the discus, and any higher would mean a lot more difficulties with the plants. :)

Hi John! Thanx for answering. I know u told me this before about high temps.. But how do i know if i need it or not? I mean how do i know whether i have metabolism problems or what with those two fish that arent eating, but looking perfectly healthy?

For my planted tank 82 seems like the magic number.

Healthy fish eat. If raising the temp will cause them to eat then not raising the temp would have caused them to eat also......

When breeding I keep the tanks at 85, and for my grow outs or show tank I keep it at 82.
