Hello friends

Just out of my curiosity how many of you (if any) remove your discus when cleaning your tanks? I had someone mention this to me and I just looked at him funny but perhaps it's a fairly common practice. Anyhow I don't remove them but am fairly new at this discus keeping anyway so any cleaning discus tank help is always appreciated!

Cheers
Jonathan

I dont think it is a common practice to remove fish from the tank to clean it. The only thing that gets out of my tank is water and lots of it daily :)

The only time I would remove my fish to clean the tank is if I were moving them to a bigger, better tank...otherwise, water changes are the routine, and a wipedown inside the tank with plain white paper towels.

Maybe the mindset of wiping down tank walls, rearranging driftwood, plants, etc etc could throw some fish into a "panic" causing undue stress leading to some disease ....I wish I knew the thought process

Fish get used to the maintenance my don't stress at all. Also moving a large discus with a net can do a fair amount of damage to the fins and scales. Moving them with your hands is not too much funeither

I don't move them....but they are so accustomed to me hand feeding that when I clean the tank is has become really annoying and funny at the same time. They chase my hand around the whole tank biting me almost the entire time.

Speaking of that - where can I buy one on those baggers for large fish? the kind you put a bag onto and scoop them up.

Not sure what your talking about....but in my monster fish keeping days, I would just scoop them out with a garbage bag.

Never. They are on their sides during WCs, refill the tank, no issues.

It might not be common practise for discus keepers,But back in the day, when all you did was top off your tank with water, had box filters and ,shudder, under gravel filters, you broke the tank down to clean it,and put your fish in a bucket while you did.
