A friend sold me a Cascade 1000 - does this make sense to you? I want to clean it - throw out the media, fill a 10 gallon tank with water and a cup or 2 of bleach, and run the filter all day?

Makes sense to me. I like my cascade 1000. It's pretty simple and repairs have been easy so far.

It came with a new impeller and seal in bags - You think I should install them or wait till I need them? This is my first Cascade - i've been using Rena

In mine I run bio balls and then two of the sponges. That's it. It's mostly for bio media. I used an idea from Bill and rigged a pre-filter out of a sponge filter. Pic of that is in the thread "Not convinced about pre-filters" thread. You could run a polishing pad in there too if you wanted.

It took a little fabrication but it works well

Cut the the strainer part of the intake all the way at the top. If I remember correctly you have to cut the tube on the sponge filter to pinch it in a bit. Try to fit it first before you do it. The. I glued the tube to the intake with super glue. Then you're able to detach the filter as you would normally to clean it out.
