Hi everyone,

I will be moving to a smaller house in the summer and I have started to plan how to fit a discus tank in it. I currently have a 80g with the following dimensions: 48 inches long, 20 inches deep and 20 inches high. My significant other (oh yes, the wives, always the wives :) ) is insisting that we do not have room for a 20 inches deep tank and that we should get a 75g tank that is 15 inches deep. Would that be fine? I guess I would need to have a minimalist setup (no plants and maybe a few driftwood branches) to allow more space for the fish to swim. But do you think a 15 inches deep tank would work? I plan to keep 6 of my wild Cuipeua discus in the 75g.

Thanks in advance.

I believe a 75g at 48" and 21" is 18" deep and a 15" deep tank would be a 55g; unless you plan on going longer or higher.

I live in a relatively small house with 8' ceilings, which is standard for older homes in the US..

My tank is 24"

and I am the wife :D

I can have the tank custom made. It does not need to follow the usual dimensions.

I am concerned with the tank's depth, not the lengh (it will be 48 inches) or the hight.

LOL... You see, husbands are easier to deal with :)

Nice to know John.

Are you starting a fundraising here in the forum to help me? :)

Some farm

Do 15" high but tank is 2 feet width.

Height does not really matter as long as there is space to grow and water is clean.

Just sometimes less view of the fish when the front fish covers the others at the back.

Thanks, but, again, my concern is about the depth, not the height or the width.

Mauro, can you get away with 48x24x20(high). I love the extra depth. You might consider doing a sump and getting a little more water volume.

Pat, my wife wants a tank that is only 15 inches deep, not 24. The question is: will I be fine with a tank that is only 15 inches deep? The tank dimensions would for a 75g would be:

width: 48 inches
depth: 15 inches
height: 24 inches

Would that be fine for a discus tank?

So sorry... I must have had a brain fade because I was thinking depth is how deep the water is... Front to back, mine is 12-ish.... but it's 48" long.

Oops Mauro, me bad. I don't know but I would simply try it. Mark or I could supply you with some tank raised F1s if with true wilds do not work.

I get a bit confused with the dimensions.
I use the LXWXH (LengthXwidthXHeight)
ie:
std 55 gallon = 48"x12.5"x21"(tall)

Thank you, Pat. Your idea about trying F1s in case my wilds don't adapt is a very good one. I would love to get some of your F1s.

Sorry everyone, I should have said width, not depth. So the dimensios of the 75g tank that I am planning are:

Length: 48 inches
Width: 15 inches
Height: 24 inches

I am concerned about the 15 inches width.
