Now that my local water company has started adding some chlorine to our tap water I need to keep a barrel for aging the water. to that endI was looking around local shop for water barrels. The food grade barrels are all previously used and contained some funky chemicals, so I chose to buy a 44 gallon Brute container as it looks much stronger the the blue or white food barrels. I know lots of people on here use the Brute, any horror stories of leaks, or good stories about long term usage would be appreciated.

Which water company are you referring to?

I am in the Greenlawn water district, up until recently no chlorine, then we had an e.coli problem in one well and bang, chlorine. It is for the Commack area.

Used one as part of a koi pond filter(indoor) for 5 years and using 2 as aging barrels for years also with no problems.

The brute cans work fine. Ive been using mine for a couple of years. I recently bought some of the barrels you mentioned but mine still had the coffee and labels on them and still smelled of coffee. I'll be rinsing and fitting them this weekend to get things rolling.

Thanks all, the can looks so strong, thicker then any other barrel I've seen so far, it was kinda pricey though.

Good points! I use a Python and it will take like 10 mins. but I'm not leaving the basement till its full. I overflowed the tank a time or 2, not to mention the hose slipping off the tank with the water on. Bad Mojo with the wife.

+1-- more times than I can count! Another nice thing about them is that you can make them mobile with the optional wheel/castor attachment.

Hey Mark.....use those spring clamps(hardware store) to grip the hose while doing water changes.....no more bad mojo with the wife.

Check Craigs.I got a 55gal food grade barrel for less then half the price of the brutes.Think I paid $20.That being said,I also use 2 brutes, but only for about 3 months,no problems yet.Guy was out of the food grade barrels.

I did check Craigs list and only got steel drums locally, was told there is a $15 reuse fee so the companies are keeping and reusing their own plastic barrels?? I did find a local company that sells used blue barrels but they had some weird chemical in it and were pretty dirty, so I opted for the brand new Brute.

You won't be sorry with the brutes. There's a lot of peace of mind and headache you eliminate.

For the Long Island guys, Trade Fair hardware in Amityville has new polyethylene containers. I bought a new white 55 gallon open drum heavy quality one for $60.

The ones in front and on side of building are used but the employees said go in the back yard and pick from the white ones which are brand new but little dirty from the snow and outdoors. He said the aquarium guys are there every day buying them. I remembered that Gil Curtins told me years ago that he purchased his there. They have all kinds of shapes and sizes from small to huge. Mine is an open drum $60, 55 gallon with the gallon levels built in on the side of the drum. Seems thick and strong. The guy told me he has worked there for 30 years and never saw one leak. Hopefully.... Lol

I use this type of float valve and have never had any issues with them. I have used them for years. http://compare.ebay.com/like/200902412784?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
You can find a quick connect adapter to go from a garden hose/washing machine hook up to accommodate the ice maker line here. No more overflows. :) http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&_nkw=RO+Garden+Hose+Adapter+with+3%2F8%22+Quick+Co nnect+for+reverse+osmosis+water+filter&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I think the brute will last for yeas too, Al. It is so strong and heavy duty its, bulletproof. Plus I want a lid on my container so nothing falls into it. They were sold out of the white ones when I was there, he did say they as fast as they come in. I used to go to Gil's place since the 1980's by the way, he's a great guy.
