Hello everyone!

Recently a bunch of us were lucky enough to get some baby red turqs from Rich T, a member here that has some of the nicest Piwowarsky Red Turqs around! Since almost, if not all of the babies went to members here, we tough it would be fun and informative if all of us posted about the growth and development of the fish under our care, each using our personal fish keeping methods, thus giving people a chance to see them develop under different conditions.

This is very much in the spirit of the original discus challenge, where everyone got fish from the same parents, and brood, with the only variation being the attention they receive while under the care of the various keepers involved.

To the best of my knowledge, the members who got fish from Rich are Ashay, Jim G., Peter, Al, Rich kept some for himself, and me. A nice sampling of members, and discus keeping methods!

This is not a contest, no winners or loosers, just friends posting about their fish, and hopefully a look at many different approaches to raising fish, and what they turn out to be like in the future. There is no end date, and no rules, just fun! I am inviting all the people mentioned above to post their personal set-up information, and husbandry practices, along with fish data.

Everyone is welcomed to ask questions at will, please direct them to a specific keeper, or to the group as a whole if you choose. Most of all, let's have fun with this! Rich produced some of the nicest babies for us to raise, let's try to do them justice!

Rich, can you please post parent data, as well as free-swiming date?

My set-up:

30 fish, in the spirit of the contest, I will not cull any of them intentionally so we can see how they all turn out. Size varies from almost 3 inches to 2 ¼ inches; average is around 2.5 inches.

Water: NJ Tap juice! 7.5 pH and 300µS/cm out of the tap.

90gal bare bottom tank, filtration handled by 2 moving bed bottle filters (Thanks Josie), 90% daily water changes straight from tap using SAFE. Temperature at 84 degrees maintained by 2 Sera heaters. Tank is located in the living room, a high traffic area.

Feeding: Up to 6 times a day using Beefheart Flakes with Pro Grow, and Freeze Dried Blackworms. I feed them directly and with an Enheim auto-feeder. Once a week they get some frozen bloodworms since I have them laying around here.

Everyone's Stats so far:

Rod's Set-up:

Peter (PAR23):
8 juvies 2.5-3" (guesstamation) in 40G breeder BB tank.
1 Jager heater
1 AC 70 filter
1 Airstone
Straight Long Island tap water aged and heated to 82F. Treated with Safe. TDS 90-100. pH 8.0 (after aging)--mainly kH which is 5-6.
2 90% WCs a day
Wipe down 2X a week
Mainly 3 feedings a day with BH/Seafood mix (compliments of Al)--Occassional flake/FDBW in between.

Rich T:
I used a 50 gal tank for this spawn
Free swimming 11/21/12.
BBS started 11/26/12. Their main food was BBS for 4 weeks. They literally swam with BBS 24/7 for that period. During this time I introduced them to my seafood mix, Discus Bio-gold and Hi-Pro Growth flake from Angelplus. Currently the get seafood mix 2x daily and the flakes to wash down the seafood.
All this time I did twice daily 80% water with 12hr aged tap water. No declor. I use a matrix carbon filter.
Temp 82 F
PH 7.2
TDS~ 100
The rest ain't got a clue.
I picked 10 and tossed them in a 29 before they all went bye-bye.
Conditions and feed hasn't changed still 2x daily water changes I can't get out of the habit.
Most are pushing 3in +

JimG:
I have 8 of them now in a 29 bb, ac 50, sera 125w, airstone.
water is tap/ro mix with 1/16tsp safe. 400us, ph 7.5, kh 5, gh 4. temp 84. my water changes as I am in the middle of the reservoir and catskill aqueduct so sometimes 70us sometimes 450+us hence why I use ro/tap, at least I can keep changes close.
wc 95% 1X a day aged water. My tap is run through carbon,1 micron and uv.
feed, sera discus granules in am. bh/pro growth flake in auto feeder 3x a day, fdblkw or super veggie kelp flakes 1x after auto feeding, rich's sea food mix at end of day before wc.
I had 9 all are about 1.75". I culled one it was dark and darting, scoped found 0 parasites, worms or protists but overstuffed intestines with sea food mix. I believe a larger piece of spinach blocked intestines and it was a matter of days before bacteria set in and bloating. I will be taking all spinach out of any feeds from now on. These fish eat like pigs. I just think one over did it but spinach does not seem to digest well in them anyway.

Al:
6 fish
I initially had placed them in a 29 Gal tank, but then opted to move them to a 55gal. Currently they are in a bare bottom 55 gal tank. I am running 2 cycled sponge filters...no power filters at this time. temp 84-85F. 50-75% water changes per day. Foods.. Beefheart seafood mix, Freeze dried Australian Blackworms (feedings 3-4 times a day).
My water is well water, aged, pH 7.6-7.8

Ashay:
6 fish
It's great in a first place to acquire fish home bred by a dear friend, meet up with another great buddy and then be part of this fun exercise that allow us to compare notes and enjoy.
In the spirit of theme, I acquired 6 fish about 2" in size. Unlike my plans earlier, they are in a 29g tank.

Water parameters :
PH from the tap : around 5
Ppm : around 85

Food: FDBW with Pro Growth
Sea food mix (salmon +cod + shrimp ). I remember old friend Sriangel said Wayne Ng calls this seafood burger mix

Water changes : I have done a good job past week of doing 35-40% water change all week since I acquired them.

Challenges :

Irregular feeding intervals on weekdays
On weekdays - I feed the fish the seafood mix before I leave home around 7:30am. At times wife feeds them in between but when my older son comes I have a deal with him to feed every 2 hrs on the clock after he enters the home. What he wants in return is a camera for himself (BTW he is 10 yrs old) and now I have a new entry in a list he tagged with his younger brother (5 yrs) and they both want a hamster
When I get home, I do a water change and feed them one more time to make sure they all are eating
This brings to challenge #2
Aging Water
As u saw water from tap is great but very high on chlorine and dissolved gases. I found our water department changes water reservoirs mid winter to spring and that this new reservoir after shift has some treatment early part. Point in time, I don't age water.
I have noticed these smaller fish get impacted negatively for first 2 hrs after the water change. Second day when I did a water change, they all turned dark. I was shocked. I am not sure what you guys do Rod, Jim, Pete and especially Rich, but it looks like for the spirit of these fish I will be forced to invest in 20g water storage to age water.
Any of your observations friends on these?

Now here is my second hypothesis. I have also got 5 blue knights from dear friends The Jersey Boyz - Rod 'n Bob. My goal is all remain the same, see how great these 2 fish from 2 great breeders grow. Again, point to mention here is these fish after a water change ( they are in a 55g - because feeding is on 2 tanks, kids have bumped their deal to 2 things I guess) on blue knights tank - they are whistling and giggling. No impact what so ever. Again, water change, aging of water is directly related to age of the fish and its so true.

Great idea Rod. I was going to keep the thread I started 2 weeks ago with recent updates but this brings all of us who were lucky enough to obtain some of the juvies into one common thread. Comparing our different methods should be very interesting and informative not to mention just FUN. Thanks Rich for providing us with such beautiful fish.......

Neither one I would consider a straight line Piwo but that's the fun. To see what developes. What's in the genes!!

If you notice the males dorsal it looks like it has been trimmed. Genetic defect or what I don't know. It's always been that way. I haven seen any of the fry with it.

100% correct, this is not a contest, no rules...just fun and observation so people can see the results of our personal discus keeping ways! My end game is a couple of pairs to keep me busy, and hopefullywe can help some new keepers make their choice on how to keep their discus.

I want to first mention how thoughtful it was of Rich to share these piwows with us. He did and excellent job raising them.
I need camera card so for now I'll just give conditions and feed.
Rod,
I'm in ... and will update and participate as best I can. I was lucky enough to be given 6 of these beautiful juvies from RichT this past Sunday. Rich, I can't thank you enough for your generosity here, nor can I say enough about the job you did raising these fry. They are beautiful fish already. Thank you so much !!!

Mine are still settling in a bit and I will post on them in the next day or so.

I am not going to re-invent the wheel on these fish.. One of my focuses here is red turqs and these are going to be raised with future breeding stock in mind... old school good discus husbandry and care.

Thanks again Rich, and to all those in this fun little experiment. Best of luck with your Gems.

A little video update, some notes:

Notice the bottle filters, the one on the right is cycled and fully functional, the one on the left was added today, you can see the difference in the media rotation in the bottle, once the media is fully covered in bacteria, you get the nice tumbling rotation in the bottle, very cool!

The observers in you will notice the 2 aqua clear intakes in the tank, vry good! They are running empty, no media for 2 reasons, they where already there so I kept them for water movement, and if I ever need to add carbon to remove any medictaion (let's hope not) they are ready to go!

Lastly, this video was taken about 30 minutes from a water change that left the fish flat on the bottom of the tank, straight from the tap, with micro bubbles and all, fish really don't seem to mind much. :)

Also thinking of moving them back to the 50 gal. where they will have a lot more room. To my eye they seem a little cramped and if my new pair doesn't cooperate.

Hello Friends

The photos - they are in apple cloud. I have to see how I can reduce their size in a cloud and put them here. I have a blue and gold event to go to today that will go all day. When I am back in the evening, uncloud or do some cloud manipulation and post photos.

Until then...

Sorry to see your having problems with your water. Maybe you should get back to the basics. I know you have been out of fishkeeping for a few years. How old is your test kit? Maybe invest in a new master kit? If your gonna get a 20gal barrel spend a few more dollars and go with the 45gal. Turning dark with the water change is not good. Again back to basics Ph out of tap and Ph 24hrs later with aeration. For now I would stop the "burger mix" and only feed a more stabilized food ( pellets or flake ). I can't see a water company sending Ph 5 water through their system. Gonna eat it away!! But I could be wrong.

The "burger mix" feed before your water change. This way a large part of the debris will be removed from the water column. It will get nasty fast.

Hey Rich! No helping!!! :) JK of course!

If I may add to your post, feeding can always be suplemented by using auto feeders, I have an enheim auto-feeder feeding my fish 4 times a day in addition to my feedings, with today's high quality dry foods available to us, auto feeders are a blessing!

Fair comments Rich and great pointers. So here are some leading clarifications. I dont think these are problems - i call opportunities for improvements.

Test kits and instruments:
I have a Hanna test kit. I don't think investing in a tool is an concern, your point is either the town or the kit is screwing. I will post a video from you tube on measuring and the exercise after I get back.
Your point on aging is a concern so i understand that. Burger mix and water column sanity is directly proportional to amount (size) of feed and amount consumed by the fish. Water change once a day I think should balance that. But your point is well taken.
Bottom line is aging is necessary for the age of fish because as I said - Blue Knights show no impact.

Yes auto feeders are an option and I do have it. Problem is the water and vaporization make these devices a big overheads. Some high ends are available that can be thought about or purchased point is there is no perfect solution.

All of the fish are now nearing the 3 inch mark, some crossed it already, this one is around 1.7 inches...very little color, but perfectly healthy.

So aged water did the trick. Fish are doing great, eating like crazy and looking really nice. Its incredible to see the shape and the grace on these fish at this very young age.

Awesome Ashay! ack in the saddle, love it!

I had a photobucket issue, and my links stopped working, for some reason I can't edit my own posts to fix it, so I will wait for a mod to help me out! :)

Ashay- Good to hear you have it under control.

Side note- my guys will be in the 29 for a little longer. Got wigglers with a different female this morning. It may be the one Rod had his eye on!! I'll post some pictures soon. Gotta change some water.

Small change here guys in my layout.. I was going to keep these guys in a 55 gal tank for several months... but got a bit inundated with fry and need that tank..so my six are getting an upgrade... I moved them to a 75 gal. They look a bit lost in that tank...and not my ideal conditions for fish this size, but it is what it is. 2 aquaclear 500s, 2 hydro 5s, heater, bare bottom, etc.. for now I will do 50 % wc every other day and play it by ear. They seem quite happy and content still come up to feed from hand.....They can clearly see a tank of Juvie cobalts next to them which I think helps.

Here is a quick update video from my batch starring Funky Cull Medina! She is the fish in the begining of the video.
I will measure them soon enough, all fish are healthy and growing well, and are mostly over 3 inches with the bigger ones nearing the 4 inch mark! Unreal growth!

If anyone can tell me how to embed video, I would appreciate it, I no longer see the full edit bars on top of my reply screen.

The fish have gotten a little bigger since the last up date. I have moved them to a 50gal to give them their needed space.
The grid on the tank measures 4 in. either way from zero horizontally (X) and 3 in. vertically (Y).

roclement
03-23-2013, 07:34 PM
My bigger ones are close to that in size, but the smaller ones are in the 3 inch mark now.
The discus guy in me wants to separate them in smaller groups but I decided to keep them together, so I will stick to it!!! :)
Most agressive eater I have is "Funky Cull Medina", the smallest, less colorfull of them all!

How is the next batch doing?

Ok...here is an update for ya'll! 04/07/13

Fish are doing great! All are very healthy and growing! Now, almost all are over 4 inches and you can clearly see the winners and losers in the batch. All are coloring up, some have weaker chins than others, and some have great shapes and fins, others have average, other than "Funky Cull Medina", there are no bad fish, just better in the group. Rigth now, i could pull 10 out of this group, that i would consider breeding quality, another 10 or so that are above average, and half a dozen good fish, I would cull 4 or 5 but will not do it yet.

Some pics for you:

Hello again! So here is another one for you! Didn't have a chance to make a video today, just snapped a whole bunch of shots from the tank to show how they are doing. Funky Cull is on the brink of being culled...I feel bad for her, she tries so much but has no shot of competing, she now hangs pretty much by herself in the tank, so maybe it's time to go.

Sorry for the lack of updates! I will post tomorrow, very busy at work lately. All fish are doing great, and were split between 2 tanks now, 20 here in my 90 gal and 10 over at Bobs. Bob has funcky cull medina and the pinched sides fish and will update on them.
Mine here are doing wonderfull, no losses, all growing like weeds! Pics tomorrow.

Video taken right after water changes, hence the stress bars showing. All fish are on or around 5+ inches. Water changes are now done every other day, and feeding is still all dry foods, with beef heart flakes in the auto feeder.

Here is a better video of them, the patterns are filling in nicely, and evenly. If I am correct, these are 7 months old now (Rich?) One of the fish is more on the brown side than the others, I tried to focus on it in the end of the video, but equally nice. Very curious to see how these mature!

OK, another month gone by, another update!

Bob went on vacation so all the 30 fish are back in the one 90 gal tank, every one is over 5 inches in size with the exception of Funky Cull Medina, she stopped around the 3 inch or so mark. You can see her in the video so it will give everyone a frame of reference on growth of these fish, they were all smaller than that months ago! :)

Full pattern on some of them, but most are 2/3 patterned, most likely feeding regimen, I am letting it stay as is so we can what happens after a full year, if I change feed now, we will never know the final differences, or what could have been, etc.

Hey Jim!

Rich's are outstanding! I wanna see all of these at one year old, curious to see if they all catch up, or if the one's that are bigger now, stay bigger, or if they all end up catching up.
Some incredible things to note, none of my 30 have died, and only one cull, all other 29 are similar in size, and almost all have great shape, that's quality parents right there!

Quality parents and the right start, Rich done good!
i just lost the one that got backed up on spinach.
I asked Rich for some mixed sizes hoping a shot at the smaller being females. they all stay consistent in size as they grow too. the coloring is very nice on these too, the blue is intense and red is rich.

Hey Rod they are looking nice! I have found that the larger ones have a tendency to remain the large ones of the group for what reason I don't know.

Here is a quick video of mine...at 1:56 you can see Funky Cull Medina in the tank, she helps put thing in perspective, as she was the same size as everyone else when they came in. Funky is a tad under 3 inches so it gives you an idea on size and growth of these pups. Enjoy!

Jim your fish look fantastic! Don't sell yourself short on your picture taking ability. I think you really captured the metallic blue these guys develop along with the candy apple red color. Especially the first, third and fourth picture. Very very nice!!

Since the move to the 125gal I have changed up their food a bit. I added 20% beef heart to the seafood mix and I also found some Pro-Growth by Andrew Soh stashed away in the freezer. Sooo that's in there also. Flakes were changed to Brine Shrimp Direct's beef heart plus flake.

I threw in three runts so the bigger guys can play and have fun. Total of 13 fish now in the tank.
