View Full Version : Most impressive 'red' strain?

Hello all!
I am wanting to obtain the most impressive, deep and bright red, as close to blood red as possible, with pattern, discus strain, available for a show aquarium.
Also, help me decide if I should invest in a single large adult pair or a small school of say 7 to 10? Which makes for a more relaxing display? There will also be a large school of some form of tetra. Tank is 150 gallons, fx5 canister filter.
Looking forward to the advice and suggestions!
Thank you.

I have been trying to find the deepest reds possible myself for a year now and nothing striking as of yet.

A pair in a 150 is a lot of wasted space imo. You can get a nice group of say 12 3" to 4" discus and mix em, keep the same strain, the skies the limit on that. Only you know what you would like, Lol.

Good luck.

I'd look into some albinos.

Not sure if they are "blood" red like the OP mentioned though. They're awesome though

The Rafflesia's I've seen offered a couple times over the past few months look like they carry the deepest red IMO.

Forest's Rafflesia's are VERY vibrant red, with nice white spotting/patterning.

If your looking for a "blood" red then I recomend a brown based red. Wayne ng red covers have a stunning red shade and would look AMAZING in a school! First challenge is finding them lol.

My +1 for the rafflesia too. I learned from a couple of friends who own the most recent generation that it is totally pepper-free regardless the water condition and environment. Of course the red color is impressive.

That's the one! I've been looking at those Rafflesia online and thought they were the one to get. Just wanted others opinions.
Hopefully one of our sponsors here has some nice specimens soon.
Thank you all for the suggestions!
So, a single large pair would be wasted on a big tank? Better to go with a larger school?

3R2's are nice - golden base, so no pepper, and they stay a brilliant red without the need for red enhancers.

I have seen pictures of Albino Red Melons...they have a nice vibrant red ...and look impressive especially with the transparent halo on the pectoral and dorsal fins.
