I'm setting up a 125 gallon planted tank and want to add Discus once the tank is well established. I've been doing my research on growing out juvies and am not clear on one thing so I'm turning to the experienced for a straight answer.

Can I grow out 6 juvies in a 20 gallon high to 4 inches before putting them into the 125?

I'm no expert, but 4" is a pretty big size. I'd either use a larger tank than a 20, or put them into the 125 earlier.

If you haven't bought the 20 yet, maybe you can get a 40. Maybe you can get one now, during the Petco $1 per gallon sale if it isn't over.

It should be fine I grow 6 Juvie to 4" in a 29gallon before I move them to my 75 gallon a month and a half ago. Largest is now 5.5". While they were in the 29 gallon I did 20% WC in the morning and 100% at night. As long as you keep up with WC you'll be fine.

I have found 37/38 gallon tanks are nice grow outs because the footprint is tall and narrow

30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 22 3/4

Appreciate the advice so far, the 29 gallon route is sure tempting especially with the $1 sale at Petco right now, I just have the ability to handle the 20 gallon right away.

How long does it typically take for a 2" Discus to reach 4" given the appropriate water and feed schedule?

It should take about 3 or 3 1/2 months. A 20 gallon is perfect for 2" discus. People sometimes put a small group of little ones in a large tank and find the discus are frightened all the time. They will get a bit cramped at 4".

If you can average 1" per month with a good diet of high protein food like Beef Heart Mix, Super Beef Heart Flakes with Pro-growth, and FDBW and daily 100+% WC you'll get to 4" in about 2.5-3 months. Considering that they are healthy stock to begin with and not stunt. I only base this off my experience and I do love raising Juvies.

+1 Small juvie do better in smaller tanks to begin with before moving them over to a grow-out tanks (75gal) or your show tank. 20 gallon would be min for me but I prefer a 29 gallon or even a 40 gallon breeder.

The bigger the tank the easier to take care and less water changes = less work.
