Most people use Prime for chlorine and chloramines but it also removes ammonia and detoxifies nitrites and nitrates. In theory if you do large water changes often then you only need it for chlorine and chloramines. I do not do such large water changes any more. I do 20-50% 2-4 times weekly so it helps with everything. I do not think there was a discussion SD that if you remove ammonia, nitrates and nitrates what do your BB eat? I assume that Prime does not eliminate all of those chemicals nor does its effect on those chemicals last long.

Prime or any other dechlorinator is unnecessary if you use well water, get you a pair of filters activated charcoal and sediment filter and that's all you need.

Prime isn't just a dechlorinator. It also promotes regeneration of slimecoat & makes ammonia, nitrate & nitrite non-toxic for approximately 48 hours so the biofilters have time to work.

I know all the stuff (I've been using Prime for some years until now). IMO it is worth to check nitrites and nitrates in the well water, if they are high you should switch to RO regardless of the Prime 48h teoric binding of those molecules. If the well water has no nitrogen compounds on it, you can forget about using Prime.
