Well, I have 180 gallons to play around with and want to grow out some discus. I am not sure what numbers to start out with if I am planning on keeping a lightly stocked tank of 8-10 fish total. I like them to have plenty of swimming room and my tank is only 5 foot long. I know most people will say buy what you can afford, but I want to buy once, that's it.
1) How many total should I look to purchase?
2) Has anyone had issues with growing out Penang Eruptions or SS strains (14 bars?), I have read posts claiming they are slower growers.
180 is not a good size for a grow out, it is way to big. Juvies will be lost in there. You can add 10 5" discus. Strains is up to you whatever you like to have.

+1 I'd suggest getting a 55 and filling it half way to start an adding water to total volume as you seem fit for the size of the fish.

What size is considered adult?
5" plus
Not at LFS, there a 3" can be a adult too :D

I don't speak LFS.. I only buy from sponsors
Sponsors are the safest way to get discus IMO.

Sponsors are the safest way to get discus IMO.Absolutely.
Here is my casualty rate for discus in the last year.:
From Sponsor: 0 losses in 10 received
From SD member (he purchased from sponsors or other SD members): 0 losses in 7 received
From LFS: 5 losses in 10 received
One of those losses was my fault for having too large of an opening for the automatic feeder (no longer used) & it jumped.
One decided to commit suicide by getting stuck between the heater & glass.
The other 3 were illness during quarantine that we couldn't cure.

I ordered some little bugs from a sponsor. This ain't my first rodeo, but always forget how many to start off with. I like raising them, my children will enjoy watching them develop.
