Any ideas? These are in my batch of 30 perfect Piwos babies, they are vry healhty, eat like pigs and grow just like everything else, just have the pinched sides...

swim-air bladder should go away in a few days

I see this alot in albino's. Not sure I would cull over it, but thats your choice. As to what causes it or if it is genetic or environmental can't really say, but would love to know. Are both sides of the fish pinched in, or just one side?

I also this on Albinos and Blue Diamonds, they are more noticeable on solid color Discus then pattern Discus, some time they grow out and sometime not, its a genetic problem.

JoJo, not swim bladder, this is a malformation of sorts...

It is on both sides of the fish, and is getting more pronounced as they grow...I think it's genetic, one of the fish is starting to show some effort to swim, almost like his spinal collum (?) is deformed in some way. In any case, I will keep them in with the group unless they show any further signs of swiming issues, or anything else.

Some of my Stendker Alenquers have that. I worried about it at first then stopped worrying as the fish kept growing.

No the 6.5" fish I just gave away still has it, always had it, so eventually I figured it was was it was.

Skinny spinal not bent, usually experience breeders can see these when they are wriggler stage mostly at the center of the body.

I have a flachenSS with pinched sides. He's nearly 2 years old now and it's never gone away, but also doesn't seem to bother him at all. He eats like a pig and is fat and sassy everywhere but in that pinched area.

I have the same deal with my red cover striated, and snow white. Except for my albino cobalts , they don't have pinched sides. I wish I can post pictures of my discus, don't know how. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or its my phone.

I've seen it, but have never thought much about it. Some were pinched on just one side. It's been a long time since I've purchased fish. I can't remeber where they came from. It was just apparent in one or two of many.

I've changed my tune on this issue, Ringo. I told you that I thought that it was genetic but no big deal. My feeling now, after thought, is that it's genetic and the affected fish should be culled.

I always thought that was the torpedo bays!!!

No seriously, Ive had Discus with that before. It in no way effected their health, just their appearance. They grew just as big and healthy as the rest of em. Its still a beautiful looking fish you have there. Very nice!!!

I do wonder though, if there was a way to clock them, if ones with "pinched sides" cut through the water faster then ones that arent. You know.........................aerodynamics?

I would not cull the fish but I would not breed them either. It is a structural development issue with the fish. It happens to all animals. As long as the fish is otherwise healthy it is not a problem.
