Not long ago someone was selling batfin discus on aquabid. They were a different strain but had very similar shape to these.

Yep there really is a deformity that looks like that. In my opinion any decent breeder would cull them. I see them popup every few years.

Someone just trying to create something new. Thinking it will attract a new craze possibly?

Kind of like Bill Engvall's "Dork Fish"

I'm not sure if it's even possible, but they look like they were cross breed with an angel fish. They almost have similar body shape.

The body shape is no different from other discus. The difference is long fins. I guess you'd call this the "veil" version of a discus. They are called bat discus, probably because of their similar appearance to saltwater batfish.

I have never seen them offered here on a large scale and it makes me wonder if the fish are somehow physically altered to get these fins. It seems that if it were genetic, they'd be easier to come by.

I think in the new Dark Knight movie...... Batman hucks those at people. It doesnt cause them harm, but confuses them long enough for him to get the upper hand!

It's interesting how far the scales extend into the dorsal and anal fins.

I feel the same way about long fin rams. I don't think they are attractive and the fins have a propensity to split.

I wonder if these discus split their fins much?

Check this out:

Next up, cross-breeding these suckers with piranhas and flying fish, and Western civilization will be over in 2 weeks.

- thanks for moving me :)

fredoman, I merged your thread with the existing thread about these discus since it was just brought up about a month ago. These have actually been around for a while but they didn't catch on as well as the albinos or the bulldogs.

The discus aren't crossed with another type of fish to achieve the long fins, but my assumption is that this is not a genetic trait like veil angelfish or long-fin rams, otherwise we'd see them more widely available. I have a suspicion that the fins are somehow manipulated when the fish are young to get this growth. I swear I read that somewhere years ago, when they first started showing up, but now I cannot remember.

Maybe one of the resident breeders know how this is done and can shed some light on it?

My 10 year old screeched with excitement He thought these were the coolest fish. My daughter said they looked like angel/discus combined. Leave it to kids. I gotta admit they look neat, however I don't think i would buy one.

I seen a local breeder with these type of fish in the early 90's they were Blue Diamonds with the long fins, similar available on Aquabid but without
the manicure job.
