Hi,

I've bought a pipe to make a breeding cone but when I try it doesn't sink. What do you do for this ? Thanks,

This is a photo of the pipe

Stick a piece of glass at the bottom with silicon.

fill it up with sand and cap both ends.

Oh thanks it's an option! By the way it says air pipe , does it harm to water?

fill it up with sand and cap both ends.

I don't want to change water quality with adding sand but thank you any other idea?

If you have sealed caps at both ends it will not change water quality. You can also use aquarium stones.

I'm not sure what PVC you are using but not all are safe, so use the one that is drinking water quality.

you cap both ends of pvc, water never touch sand or sand never touch water. just fyi

edit: Babar beat me by a second :) . thank you Babar

That's a small picture so I can't see if it's schedule 40 PVC. Looks more like thin type used for drainage, if that's the case you are right it will float. If you make it out of schedule 40 PVC then you have no problem with it sinking, therefore no need to add anything else.

I simply silicone the pipe to a piece of tile. Ever think is easy to clean. I also normally cut a opening in the bottom of the pipe where it hits the tile. I never cap it.

It's a pipe thats written on it "Aircircle brand name www.aircircle.de and when I enter the site it's all about air pipes.. nothing written other than that." I don't know if it's a pvc or not but hard white plastic pipe..

You really should find out whats its composition is and possibly do a water test. Put the pipe into another tank or even a bucket and test the water before and maybe 24 hours after. See if anything has changed before you put it with your discus.

If you are not sure of something, the sadest thing would be is to kill your fish on an experiment.

How big is the pipe? Looks a little on the large size. Remember discus do not need a cone to spawn. It developed because is tends to make the female lay the eggs in a better group so it is easier for the male to cover them. This results is a higher hatch rate. I tend to use 2 inch PVC.

Mr John,

I guess It might be large size not very sure though.. I take out the pipe in case of DiscusLoverJeff's advice which is vital.. I'll try on an emty tank first for 24 hours..

This the way I screen eggs on my pvc.

Capped both ends and filled with gravel so it doesn't float.

Drill a hole in the bottom also the top if it's not open so it will fill with water.

I called the shopping company "Bauhaus" and asked the item with the barcode number, they said that it's an aspirator pipe and they can't confirm if it's a pvc or not.. I'm going to return the item to the company today and look for a pvc..

That is a safe approach, use a material that is known to work and is most importantly safe for the discus. best of luck

I have used as small as 1/2 inch pvc pipe with decent results. Reflection Ds from the 90s
