Thanks Tolga, these are Demini heckels. They look similar to the Unini heckels to me. I have five. Four in the main tank and a smaller one in with the F1s.

Hi Lawrence, Mark said these are Demini Heckels. Perhaps the collection points are in the same locale as the Unini ?

These heckel are young and about five inches so a bit of growing/maturing to do. This heckel has a lot of blue on the gill plate.

Thanks plecocicho, if the red wigglers are smaller right away. The fish will play with the worms until they are in bits and will eat them. The heckels were introduced to the red wigglers the day before.

So the heckels are housed with the Cuipeua in the 230 and a couple of weeks ago I started to include RO in the WCs to bring the TDS from 230s (full tap) to a 2/3 RO to 1/3 tap mix with a target TDS of about 80. The TDS in the tank is about 100 now and the heckels are showing more blue. I was already sort of planning this so the heckels need their own dedicated tank.

musicmarn1
09-02-2013, 01:41 AM
and do domestics like the red wrigglers as much? i just spent the last month learning white worms and growing those cultures, are red wigglers as good for my normal blue based discus?

Second Hand Pat
09-02-2013, 08:21 AM
I got the Demini Heckels from our sponsor Mark at Discus Origins. They are a blue based wild heckel. What wild discus come from the Rio Abaixo? other then the spelling I did not find anything.

You can use red wigglers with wild or domestics discus and the worms will not effect the discus color. I feed the smaller worms and leave the larger ones to make more babies.

When I first got them I kept them in full up tap during QT and moving them into the 230 and slowly eased them into a 2/3 RO to 1/3 tap. TDS is about 100 or so, Gh about 70 ppm and ph about 7.2 or so.

winn0923
09-27-2013, 10:42 PM
They fare much better w softer water? Are you gonna lower it more or keep it like that?

Mine thrombetas definitely doesn't like tap even go mine is only at 7.4 out of the tap

A GH of 70 ppm is considered soft. My water is not acidic however. I am leaving it for now as the heckels are growing well, eat well and are happy...plus they are not mature yet.

Pat, Your discus are so beautiful. That natural body color, with the spots, and bars placed for camouflage in their natural habitat. This is what has been removed in our blended discus breeding for multi coloration. Each has its explicit place in our home showcase aquariums.
The earthworms, are they home grown?
These two types of wilds, Cuipeua, and Heckel seem far more sociable to your camera, than the Tefe wilds you posted photos of a couple years ago. Could it be the camera itself, or a difference within the fish. Are both types wild caught, or aquarium F type breeding of pure wilds. The Heckels with the deep black stress bar running through their eye area does not project that glaring wild look of the red eyes as those other types. At least its not as pronounced as some of the other types. Beautiful non the less. Thanks for those terrific photos. We love looking at the natural wild forms of discus.

Second Hand Pat
09-30-2013, 09:26 AM
Yes, the earthworms or red wigglers are home grown. I maintain two colonies. Regarding the picture quality between the Tefe and the Cuipeua/Heckel pictures, I received a new camera about a year ago which gives me far better picture then before. The Tefe have always be good with me taking pictures of them. Currently they are housed in a smaller (100 gallon) tank with a black background and they seem more incline to show their bars in this tank then when they are in the 230 gallon tank with a more natural background.

The heckels have a more muted eye; just a hint of red vs the full red eye of the Tefe and Cuipeua.

plecocicho
09-30-2013, 11:08 AM
Contrary to what some "experts" say, black eye heckels are wilds too, its just that red eye is more sought for. Some idiots on one discus championship even tried to disqualify black-eyed heckels, cause they were in a "wrong" section of wild discus.

Second Hand Pat
09-30-2013, 11:17 AM
Fredo, how were the wilds being separated?.. by eye color?

plecocicho
10-01-2013, 10:01 AM
No, phenotype corerctly (heckel, green, blue, brown (althought they are the same species)). Its just they argued tahta black-eyed are hybrids and so have to be in a open class. I cant link you that story, cause i read it quite a few years ago. Discus classes have always been a hot topic and soem classes are very poor defined, eg red discus. It can ve san merah, pigeon based, virgin red or of wild ancestory just like the original Schmidt-Foecke.
