From what I have read on different forum's that females breed earlier than males. Females can start breeding as early as 8 months but males at the same age are not fertile. Males take another 4 months or so. the pair will spawn but the eggs will not be fertile. How true is this?

I'd say it's pretty accurate. This goes for a lot of South American cichlids. Females will often breed younger and at smaller sizes. There have been people here who report females spawning as young as six months. I'd say 10 - 12 months is probably more common for pairing and spawning. It can happen sooner or it can take longer. My last batch didn't start spawning until they were about 14 months old.

Sounds about right if they do start to spawn that young I would separate them to try and get a little more growth as they slow down once in breeding mode.
