I am using a brute trash can for aging my water and after a month it looks like below. Should I be worried about this or clean the tub every week?

Yikes, clean it out and wipe down every time. I wipe mine a few times a year and it never looks like that, not even anywhere close. Are you adding a dechlor to the barrel?

No not adding anything to it but tap water.

Do you have nitrates or phosphates in your tap?

Your aquarium would look the same if never cleaned.

You have lovely clear water flowing out of your faucets. Go take the traps off under the sinks and see what the pipes look like inside. :). Don't clean your toilets that are flushed numerous times per day with fresh water. Same brown nasty crap will develop nder the rim (which never sees anything but clean fresh water) and will trail down the bowl.

Let it ride or clean it for aesthetics.

When was the last time you tested your tap water parameters? Cleaning your holding tank monthly will avoid that. You might want to look into a prefilter on your main tap water line.

Obviously, you have a lot of junk in your tap water - test your tap water (I would think you have pretty hard water) wipe your tank out weekly or check into a filter system for your tap water (many threads on filter systems)

I wouldnt be worried. Just looks like hard water / iron stains. Look into an iron filter.
Do you get red stains in your toilets too ? tell-tell sign of iron.

The iron is dissolved in the water, but when you let it "age" it gets exposed to O2 and turns into rust.
The iron filters run the water over an oxidizer agent that makes the dissolved iron "rust out", then you put a sediment filter after it to catch the rust.

Well it's got to be iron. I have a tub that I haven't been aerating and it doesn't have any of this and I am starting to see a little brown on the glass of the tank where the air driven devices are.

I would recommend a three stage carbon filter with a micron filter at the end then you will take out the heavy metals and no need for prime and have nice clean water for your discus......Josie

Thank you Josie and all. I will look into filter options. I knew I have really hard water, always measures around 315. I have been thinking about getting a water softener for the whole house but getting a filter for my aquarium sink will probably be cheaper. I do have a 200g/day RO/DI but I think it will be a little over kill for this and I was only planning on using it for my breeding tanks, when I get some discus to get down! ;)

Been away for a bit. Discus are doing good but I still have issues with hard water. I will take my lumps. I have been a little lazy with cleaning my aging tube. Here is a video of the junk I took out after cleaning them this weekend.

I got one of these whole house water filters with an iron cartridge for one of the stages. I hope it will reduce the minerals in my water.

What is the source of your water? Man that is some nasty stuff there. Are your fish ok?

Fish are fine. I have public water from my township. They get the water from 3 springs in the area. There have been a lot of water issues with my township, seems like there are town meetings to discuss the water quality issue every month. You can actually fill a glass with water and see stuff floating around in it. Hopefully this whole house water filter will help.
