I'm thinking about replacing my current substrate with pool sand. I have a few 56G column tanks; what's the rule of thumb for determining the amount of sand necessary for each tank?

I put 2 inches in my 75 gallon and it took 70-75 pounds. I think 50 pounds would do yours at two inches. Leslie's pool sand is what I used. It's cheap so just grab 100 pounds and you will have some on hand when it starts getting low from siphoning.

I like a shallow sand bed because it's easier to maintain (less concerns about gas pockets and whatnot). Usually I try to keep mine 1 - 1.5" deep. This is going to depend on the foot print of your tank. I think I have maybe 1.5 - 2 bags (50lbs) in my standard 55s, but I honestly can't remember at this point. I always buy a few bags at a time and just keep any extra in the garage for future tanks.

I use just a thin layer of pool filter sand, its maybe a quarter of an ich..... It was 50 pound bag in a 7' x 2' 180 gal tank ...... But I'm planning to add another 50 lb bag.

Are you going to have plants in the sand? If so use more, if not less. Buy extra because you will always lose some when cleaning or changing water. PFS is cheap enough that an extra 50 lbs is $8-12 if I remember correctly. Buy it all at once, why make more than one trip? Gas could be $8-12.

Has anyone had success with Home Depot's pool sand?

Well pool sand if good but it can make the water dirty with less time. because the soil particals in sand make the water filthy. Anyhow I observed that many people using the sand in pool without any complaints

You should rinse your PFS many times until the rinse water is clear. Then add the PFS to your tank.

I've never rinsed Leslie's pfs, and after one WC, its fine. Done this many times.

I use pool filter sand and I also get it from Leslie pool. It's dirt cheap and the discus love it. Even in my grow out tanks I put a little bit of sand. It's not hard to clean and the size of the sand is perfect. I believe that discus like to shift the sand looking for food and I have never liked a bare bottom tank so I guess this is a great compromise between gravel or bare bottom.

Not every Leslie's carries simply white, I had to order mine. It's not the bag they are changing, it's the producer/supplier. Mystic simply white is the best, cleanest white color and most uniform particles.

I asked about why they change the sand. They use 2 suppliers depending on what each supplier has on hand when they order is what they go with.
I compared the mystic white I got this year to some left over I had from last year the grain size is the same but the color is more tan. I like the white better as looks go.
