Hi everyone.
I'm getting some new discus in a few weeks and when I look on Google Images for Red Pigeon discus, the red pigeons and the red maps look almost the same. The red map comes up in the search, too. I can tell they're both Pigeon-based, but are they the same strain with different names?

Names don't really mean much. Breeders make up names for marketing purposes.

Not necessarily. Names are also used to describe pattern. Red Pigeon normally has more of a red or orangish base with minimal white markings and the red map more of a white base with a random interlocking red pattern.

Both are Pigeons but the pattern on the body is called Red Map.

Okay. I'm getting my discus from a store that gets their discus from Hans, so I'm going to order some discus through them. Just trying to find some strains I like.:)

don't waste ur time with the store they probably get wholesale/less quality then mark up price nice and high.get them str8 from hans himself im sure the store mark up will cover the shipping cost from hans.and don't worry about the names most are generally the same fish redmap, checkerboard, carnation, honeycomb, and so on and so on

Granted, names are used to describe pattern but there are many names out there that are used to describe the same fish depending on who is selling them. Could someone post a picture of a red map and verify who named it? My point is not to get hung up on names, purchase your fish from actual pictures from the breeder because one person's red map (or whatever) will be different from another's red map. All you have to do is conduct an image search on google to see why the OP has this question.
