Hi all, I'm posting to get your opinions on some Discus I am looking to purchase as I don't have a trained eye in marking the quality of them as yet.

First set of pics will be some supposed San Merahs. I've read on here that they aren't supposed to have any stress bars whatsoever but when I asked the dealer about them, I was told 'All Sun Merahs have them. They are derived from the Alenquer Strain. But as they get older they tend to hide them and develop even more red in the body. Which is why people assume that they do not have them.'

So I'm not sure if there is any merit to that statement.

And I will not be posting the name of the dealer but before anyone suggests it, I cannot purchase from any of the sponsers due to my locale. Thanks again and here are the pics.

What makes you think they are stunted? With the cost of getting them imported I really can't take the risk that they are..

It's the size of the eyes that reveals whether or not they are stunted. You should be able to "stack" 6-7 eyeballs in a straight line from the top of the head to the bottom.

Here's a pic and credit goes to the myfishforum for an excellent depiction of what to look for in eye size. =)

Thanks for the replies, that eye chart is really helpful!. @Allwin, I'm not sure of the age of the fish but the size I am to purchase is 4 inches not including the tail fin.

Good to see you here on SD, my friend mojo from AC.
Those discus are far from top of the line, but as warlock said, I've seen far worse too.
There is hope for their developing into some reasonably nice-looking discus, though.

I know how tough it can be getting quality fw fish, much less discus, in your heck of the woods (having lived in Grenada for a couple of years), so if you're attracted to them and the price is right for you, then go for it and best of luck to you.
Give them TLC and lots of clean fresh water and you may well be pleasantly surprised.

Hey what's up man, yeah I decided against purchasing from this dealer. My main motive was saving fish and wildlife permit fees but I decided I'm just going to buy from Kenny and import them here.

I am of a deferring opinion here and think your idea of getting your fish from Kenny is the best option. There is another member living in Trinidad who acquired his fish locally and they carried a nasty disease. The member is discusmurderer. Do a search on his threads to learn more and here is a thread talking about his issues.

Thanks guys, I've kept Discus in the past but never on the proposed scale I'm about to embark on. I actually met Daryl (discusmurderer) on this forum and he was the one that brought the situation to light for me with regards to the internal parasite.

Hopefully I can make it in time for Kenny's August shipment, if not, there's always September ;)

Kenny would be a much better choice.

Yes, I found it on another site a long time ago when I was wondering how to tell when discus are stunted. I wanted to give credit to them for posting the pic.

Turns out that Warlock had linked to the same pic in his homestead section, so we double posted.
