What is the latest and greatest for softening the water in the tanks? I have little or no room for equipment.

It will depend really on size of tank (tanks), how many discus, whats your plans are, etc...

Right now I'm only concerned with one 20 gallon tank with a pair of Galaxy Turquoise.

Then you can always buy a small 50 gal per day unit. I find it best when breeding to keep your TDS between 70 and 80. RO water mixed with some RO Right and your in business. Just age it before introducing it to your fish. Gradually lower the TDS to your desired goal.
