Hey all,

I'll be getting in some wild greens next week and I've yet to settle on a beef heart recipe. All the recipes I've been looking into seem to aim at some gooey fishy pudding without much solid substance and seem as if they'd be detrimental to water quality. Are my concerns legitimate? If so, what are some viable alternatives?

Thanks in advance

Great! Thank you. All the meats are raw correct? And if you don't mind me asking, what other foods do you include in your discus diet? And should this seafood recipe be fed to them primarily? Thanks again

Yes, all the meats are raw and I use it in one of my feedings. I also feed Al's FDBWs, various flake including Bill's super BH flake, brine shrimp and live red wigglers.

Thanks for this. Going to try this over the weekend. I have read that you should add one egg to the mix. Your opinions?

I shell my shrimp prior to inclusion in the mix. :)

Dash, I do not include eggs. You might search some of the other mixes to see if anyone else does. Eggs is a good source of protein but with all the meats seems redundent. Does your reading indicate a reason for adding an egg?

I was told it helps bind the food. Have you tried beef heart vs seafood mix? This would be interesting to see how fish do on the different mixes

Being mainly a wilds keeper I prefer the seafood to the BH mix...personally preference mainly. The shrimp makes an excellent binder for the seafood mix.

Thanks. I have found beef heart to be a bit difficult for my fish to eat. I did not make it my self but got some from an LFS. The problem I have found is that the beef heart is still to big after it has defrosted. Should I put it back in to the blender? Sorry if I have deeviated from the thread a bit.

Dash, I would try that. The first time I made BH I also got it too big and had to run it through the food processor again.

I'm a gluten for punishment and hand grind my heart twice. First time fine second time extra fine. Two cups rolled flat in a ziploc gallon freezer bag. If the heart is trimmed really well discus have no trouble eating it. I use cooked oatmeal and flake food to bind mine.
