how would one NATURALLY achieve this through selective cross breeding? Lets say one doesnt have access to good quality RT stock, how would you then try and get an average quality RT (with brown stripes) to throw out fry with much redder stripes as opposed to brown stripes on the parent currently?

What would you cross it with to try and achieve this in the off spring?

marlboro's? melons? pigeons?

All three of the fish you listed (marlboros, melons, and pigeons) are pigeon blood discus. You would probably want to avoid crossing non-PB to PB because you often end up with peppered fry.

cross with a red cover or virgin red and select those with nicer patern to inbreed later on.- A red alenquer would do the job too

even if the marlboros, melons, and pigeons are clean?

Unless you were willing to take this to the F2, in which case this is a viable and workable option. But Ryan is right, in F1 your not going to like the results, F2 will give you some fish to work with.
