Some of you might know me from a former topic about mu wildcaught discus. For about one year I changed to other amazon cichlids. Was nice but not really what I wanted.I cannot help but I am infected by a certain virus. This is why I changed my tank again in a discustank.Hope you enjoy:

@Marinum:I do think this is a very good combination with discus. They are not that busy like most of the geophagus sorts. Also not that big.Like the orange colour of the heds in combination with the red turquoise of my discus.

What is the common name of the long flat plec looking dude? Is it a plec or some kind of catfish?

Wildcaught dutchman
10-27-2013, 03:58 PM
@OC Discus:It is a catfish named planiloricaria cryptodon. It measures about 35-40 cm.It is really a quiet fish.Only when I feed my discus spirulina flakes they get mad. They have a very special mouth to get the food out of the sand.My vid about these fish is the best way to show this embarrassing mouth. Here he comes:

@OC Discus:Thnx for the compliment.I think you cannot get a better one.The only thing I miss a little in my tank is nice plants. In The Netherlands we say:Yoy don't have green fingers.Means that you do not treat plants in a good way so they die.:cry:

Wildcaught dutchman
10-28-2013, 04:17 PM
@YSS:I have had some problems with certain Wilds. Now I know that adding minerals are important and I do now. That time I did not know yet. Also domestics are easier to keep.I am truck driver and it is better for me these domestics. For example no discus was used to eat granulate. After 2 weeks almoast all my domestics started to eat it.I feed them twice now granulate from a feedingmachine. In the evening they get food from the fridge.

My wilds did not eat granulate for example. Were much more diifficult in that way.
Also I like the bigger discus and more round.

Planiloricaria are close relatives of twig catfish and sturistomas. That funky mouth has the largest possible surface area, great for milion buds to look for invertibrates in sand beaches, where he is found.

What is your cleaning/maintenance regimen? Does it always look so clean? Also, what type filtration do you use?

Wildcaught dutchman
11-02-2013, 03:44 PM
@OC Discus:The sides of my tank are covered by wood.My tank is standing rather close to the windows. Also I do think that the discus are less stressed when they see only the front of the tank.I think discus do not like a lot of light. In nature they do not have also and when they have they can search for shadow if they want.I do have a Akwaline background but you are right you do not see a lot of it.I only use 2 T5 lights during the day. From 16.00 untill 20.00 I do use 2 T5s extra.

I do a WC twice a week.About 350 litres each WC.I use a sump and an external pump, the Eheim professional 3e.I do also use a diffusor. In spite of what a lot of people say I see the discus like the flow of the water.Because of this flow a lot of dirt comes in my external pump.Almost never clean the ground of my tank.Because of this flow almost all the dirt comes in the pump. After every WC i do clean my pump so also twice a week.

I hope I have given you the wanted information. Will put soon some extra photo's and vids over here.:D

Thank you Dutchman. I assume the background is an insert. Is it sealed or do you remove it to clean behind it? What about the wood on the sides- is it stationary, or do you move it and clean around it? Or is the flow just good enough to keep things clean.

Sorry for all the questions, but your tank is exceptional. Hope you don't mind.

@Oc Discus:I don't mind. The background is fixed and I cannot clean behind. The wood on the sides I do not take out.The flow is that good because of my diffusor. The water circulates good enough from the left upperside of my tank to the left underside to the inlet of my external Eheim pump.It has to be cleaned twice a week.I think that says enough.

@tbie2:Thnx mate!!:D

@OC Discus:Discus were not put in a bare tank but immediately in the displaytank. He first had 6 discus. One died,Later on he bought 5 extra from the same person. This was a later batch of his discus. So I have two kind of discus.Older and a few younger ones.Still nice to see that the ones I thought they were fullgrown still grow. One male is very impressive, becomes thicker and thicker. His eyes are still not that big so I wonder what a monster it will become!!!;)

Because I fouind my group was too small I bought later 6 extra discus.Sure not Stendkers but liked the more impressive colours and small eyes. One spotted included. Also a big discus but way too skinny.I think discus had flaggelates for long time.Have done anything but nothing worked. In the end I took him out of my tank because discus suffered a lot.

You must clean your tank just before taking the pictures. Looks amazing. Do you count on water changes and scavengers to clean between the wood, or do you move things and clean behind it?

I have made a hard decision.I had to skip my guinacara's owroewefi Grand Lassaut. In the beginning they were quiet.Later on when they became bigger they were agressive towards my discus.Last night I have changed these 7 fishes for 7 satanoperca's jurupari F1 of 8-10 cm.They are beautiful too and it is quiet again in my tank!!!!;)

Ryan

I have seen Guianacara be fairly aggressive. I was curious to know if you had issues with them; now I know the answer. Beware -- sometimes Satanoperca get aggressive when they're larger, too. :(

Krobia xinguensis are such a great choice for a discus tank. I miss mine. I notice that one of yours is very round -- it must love feeding time. :D

Do you ever get bacterial slime on your driftwood? How do you deal with that?
What about ick and other parasites? I suppose your fish were adults when you added them to the planted tank.

Cool Dutch. What do you call the sand sifters? Are they primarily algae eaters or omnivores? Reminds me of the lawnmower blenny in reef tanks. Do you have to add special food for them?

Wildcaught dutchman

@OC Discus:The ones you mean are Planiloricaria Cryptodon.I really like them because they feed themselves by filtering the sand with their special construction of the mouth. It is amazing!!I do not feed them with special food. They eat everything but they become mad when I feed spirulina flakes!!

Have made a vid where you can see a close up of these particular fishes:

I was actually referring to the small cichlid looking fish taking sand in the mouth and expelling it from the gills. They have a speckeled body. It is the fish in the previous picture/video.

@OC Discus:Ok.The ones you mean are satanoperca leucostica.Mines are F1.I changed them for my guinacaras because they became agressive towards my discus when they mated. These satans are very relaxed fishes. They are still young, about 8-10 cm.They become twice as big.

@Joanstone:Have had five of them but sold two because they have become big, about 40 cm.I do have them now about 15 months. They are quiet fishes which eat the food the discus do not eat anymore.
