Remember you asked for comments....Big eye, pointer face, and as Ryan said lots of color for a small size. I would not call them quality discus. Everyone starts somewhere. I would suggest reading everything you can and keep working with them. They can teach you a lot.

The bigger the fish the easier it is for new folks to have success. I normally suggest people get the biggest that they can afford.

Good luck. I will be leaving to go deer hunting in the morning but will check on you when I get back.

well just take it slow and get familiar with them first plus read the heck of this forum. guys like John & Bill are very experienced and of course you have Hans right around the corner from you too. Like PP_GBR alluded to though, you may want to start with a bare bottom if you want to grow them big. The only alarming thing I saw was that it sounded like you said you bought two to cycle your tank?????

Much of the quarrelling seems to be between the largest and next largest fish. My largest is not threatened by the smaller ones and doesn't bother them. Adding a group of larger fish to a couple of smaller ones shouldn't be a problem. They will have to work out a pecking order among themselves. With a group of six, you should be ok. Most experts here recommend quarantine the new fish for six weeks.

With only two existing fish, could the main tank be considered a quarantine tank? Consider them all in quarantine?

Add some Tetra "Safe Start" with bio spira directly to your filters immediately before adding the new fish to establish your cycle.

If you've only had it a week, it looks like it was stunted before you got it. To me it looks about 1/2 the size it should be based on color, eyes, and shape.

Most experts recommend daily water changes of 50-100% for growing out juvenile discus. I would change at least 50% before adding the new fish. If nitrates or anything else is high, change 75% or more.

Did you use Tetra safe start with bio spira? If you used it two weeks ago with only two fish, some of the bacteria has died. Add the treatment for your size tank immediately before adding the fish (1 hour) so the bacteria can handle the load of the new fish.

Much depends on your maintenance regimen. If you do 75% wc daily, the bacteria are not as big an issue. If do wc every couple days or less, the bacteria will help.

What size is your tank? What kind of filtration?

If you went into the fishroom, you must have liked how they looked and picked the fish you wanted. Too late to take them back (being so close, you might be able to trade with the supplier? Couldn't hurt t ask, especially if you are buying four more.

You can grow out fish in a smaller tank than you end up with. For grown fish, you only want about 1 per ten gallons unless you plan to continue to do frequent water changes.. It is common to get a few more than you need in the initial batch, assuming some will die or just not be what you wanted. So, in a 55 gallon, you could either get the 5 or 6 you really want (especially at 4" and above) or get 8-10 or more small ones and eventually move some to another tank.

There is good reading here. Look at the forum on "Discus for beginners" and a few others. You will see the perfect way to do it. Possible ways of doing it. And ways to not do it. Also, post a new thread for specific help, a specific question, and someone will help you.

Alright, hold up, let's not go running around saying they're stunted after it was stated that they're directly from Hans not long ago at all. That's the best way to get a lynch mob on you in a heart beat on here. Now, looks like this isn't your first rodeo in all around fish keeping from the pics because I'm suspecting there are other tanks. First thing is first (and this is coming from someone with substrate)... take out the substrate. I DO know the difficulties of growing discus with substrate and while there are others on here much better than me on growing with substrate (who hardly ever come forward), take the gravel out. For your first experience then you will do yourself justice and those discus justice by removing the gravel.

I saw briefly something about saying you were abiding by WC's (I think...)... good good. Well keep up with that. Now, I'm still scratching my head on you currently cycling the tank with discus... did Hans know that when you got them from him? And definitely tell the truth because like Saint Nicholas, Hans is always watching :p

Maybe he did and has a plan for you. I don't know, but definitely need to know more so more of us can help. Once that tank is cycled then you definitely need to go back to him and get more (at least 3-4) because they do better in groups... that's been proven time and time again on here.

alright, well are you going to use a currently working filter on the big tank that you're going to set up? definitely do that before getting more. sounds good that you're getting more but just want to make sure you don't lose all of them to an uncycled tank. And sorry, I hope I'm not coming off negative to you. Just trying to help.

well the diet you're giving them will certainly get them big, quick. watch you're water parameters with the beef heart though. only because beef heart is a little messier than other foods and may cause you to do WCs each day you do it. check out John Nicholson's fish, threads, & posts. he's big time on beef heart & hans so that'd be a good member to mirror. don't feed John though... he's a wild Texan... may bite your arm and more off ;) I don't think you'll be able to get him any time soon anyhow since I think he said he was hunting this weekend but still, check out his threads and "Strawberryblonde's" (Toni). She (Toni) is another Hans fan and grows some monsters.
