Well…here goes! I just spent a fortune on a non proven pair of checkerboards and a pair of Blue Diamonds from Hans! They will be delivered on this coming Wednesday. Never ordered two pairs of Adult discus. I'm so excited and will take pics when they are settled. They look amazing on Youtube. Wish me luck!!!

I was just in his fishhouse yesterday, looking at some AMAZING unproven pairs. If the ones I saw are yours, well congrats! Simply amazing fish. Also, if they spawn for you, just be ready to spend tons of time/money raising up those juvies, if that's what you've got in mind! lol. -Don

Don,Yes, some of those are shortly going to be mine. I bought a pair of Checkerboards and a pair of Blue Diamonds. They are not proven but if they should be viable of course It will be fun to try to raise the fry. If nothing happens that will be okay too because the four fish that I saw on Youtube were so beautiful they can live out their very long lives just being beautiful! LOL! Thanks Richard and I will take some pictures of them when they arrive and get settled. Rufus

I can provide pics better I think. Pics and Video don't do them justice and they are huge!!! The checkerboards are spectacular in size and color contrast and the Diamonds are incredibly beautiful. Thanks Hans! They were worth the wait.

Thanks John. They are not eating yet but Hans told me not to worry about that. I don't feed beef heart which they are used to. I have his beefheart mix coming on Tuesday. Hopefully they will be hungry by then.

I like your personal touch Pat but when I can I shall read the thread you sent. I'm so busy taking care of my discus that I haven't time to sit and learn from a tutorial! LOL! Thanks. Rufus

Okay I have a question for John or Pat or anyone else that has info about Sponge Filters. As you know from this thread and my bad video posts I just received these amazing unproven pairs of discus from Hans. Each pair are in QT that are twenty gallon longs. I have AC 300 filters in each tank. I've tried to cut the out take of water because I feel it may be too much current in the tank to make each pair feel like they can actually be still sometimes and not have to continue to swim all the time. I have no experience with sponge filters but thought maybe I could put a sponge filter in at the same time and let it load up it's bio filter so that eventually I could remove the AC filters. The AC filters could eventually be put into a new fifty five gallon that I am setting up next weekend and they would already be seeded. The question is what kind of Sponge filter should I get and how long do you think the sponge filters would have to be in the QT tanks for them to actively start working? I will await your answers and opinion. Perhaps I'm just being a nervous fool and perhaps the AC filters are okay but as every one knows Acs are not easy to adjust for slower intake and out.

Rudus, I have no experience with tanks this small but I get the largest sponge filter I could for each tank. Now are these AC 300 or AC 30s. The largest AC I know is the 110. I have a couple AC 30s I run on my 40 breeders and the AC 30s are too narrow fit over the tank rim on a 75. I wonder if they will fit a 55?

Yep you can put in some hydro spnge number 4's and let them get started.

Okay thanks for the suggestions. Since AC has changed all the numbers on their filters I know them as the 500 and the 300. So maybe the thirties that you're talking about are the new name for the old 300. John thanks I will see if I can pick them up tomorrow. How long before they would be actually working? What do you think. Josie, I wish I could make video like you but it won't happen soon. Thanks Pat. Rufus

Rudus, this is the AC 30 I'm thinking about...

Pat that is same AC filter I'm talking about. I have one of those in each twenty gallon tank.

I solved the problem! Had the AC filter in both tanks in the middle of the tank and moved them to the side and now there is an area where the discus can be less worried about the current. Still going to get the sponge filters and start them while the AC filters are running and going to get another sponge filter insert for both filters which will slow the out take as well.

Terry, Well, brace yourself for how beautiful they are!!! I've never been to Han's fish house but if I go I certainly won't bring my credit cards!!!! LOL! I'll be in the poor house in one visit. Also, the two pairs still have not eaten and it's been a week. I'm on a business trip right now but will be home on thursday and Han's meat mix is waiting because I had some delivered today. Hope they are hungry when I get home. Han's has assured me that this is normal so I'm trying not be freaked out about it. Let me know what you did get after you get there. Good luck and don't know if you're driving or flying but say hello to Hans from me. Best wishes. Rufus

Rudustin, I can't wait to get there and excited to see all the amazing fish I have watched in Hans videos. We are driving to Baltimore so 10 hours there and 10 hours home. The trip home will be great we will have our new fish to motivate us during the trip. we originall budgeted enough for one pair as of right now I think we are taking enough for three pairs. so ya you are right we will be broke when we get done. lol. Adults Discus not eating when they are moved into a new environment is totally normal and 1 week is nothing. Trust me they can go alot longer then that and when they are hungry enough they will eat. Don't sweat the small stuff. lol. I will update you when we get home. Can't wait:)))

Terry.

Hey Terry, Please take care driving and let me know what you got when you get home. Thanks for the advice about the two pairs from Han's not eating. I'm used to juveniles who love to eat almost immediately. I will be patient. I gave them one cube of FDBW's tonight and they did pick at it which is encouraging and I did put a small amount of Han's meat mix with some garlic juice to encourage them to eat. Trying not to bother them too much by observing too closely. Going to do a water change on them tomorrow and hope that will encourage them to eat as well. Best Regards. Rufus
