Saw this on Heiko's FB page. Pretty nice fish. Grand prize winner in some competition. I wonder if artificial color enhancing agent was used on this fish. If not, this is a pretty nice fish!

Nice fish but that red seems almost too bright.

I'm not saying one way or another. I only remember seeing one that bright ever before, it was in a lfs and I had no doubt about that one.

I would say that the lighting and the a photo fix program may of been use to enhance the effect of the fish. But in life under the right light it probably wouldn't be far off how it appears in the picture?

So red and I am a sucker for red fish ....

Those are my thoughts as well, but not sure whether there are any rules regarding color enhancement in competition ....

This fish won the grand prize in a competition, so I am sure the fish looked pretty good "in life."

Yun, do you know which competition? Other online pictures might be available.

Love red discus for sure and this one is amazing if there are no color enhancers added.

I had someone in one of my threads say that the splits in the dorsal fins of my Discus pictures just like in this fish picture were caused by poor WC. I tested my water and had 7.0 pH 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 5 ppm nitrate. I've worried ever since but my guys show those splits only when they flare fins and show off.

Anybody have an opinion. Mine are same front part of fins on back of fish only. All else fully joined.

What splits are you referring too? The only splits I see are the hard rays and that is what they normally look like. Now there is a little roughness to the edge of the tail but I bet that is from shipping.

The hard rays. That's good to know its normal. Mine have that. Since my fish have intact fins everywhere and I have no clamping I assumed this person was referring to hard rays. Since I put effort into care I worried. Maybe I was misinformed.

Mine all but one have very long fins.

Not sure, Pat. May be China based on the comments, but didn't say.

It has a mitalic like color to it, I dont think it is color enhances, i think it is just the lighting.

What cross produces a fish like this?

For example, virgin red X ? ? .

Im sure it also takes loads of WC, dedication, line breeding/ crossing out and likely some good luck but what strains are used to make the awesome blue face/Fins with red body?

Something about the color looks enhanced in the pic.

It appears to be like the old San Merah type -- a bar-less red fish with a solid face (with blue sheen) and black halo. You don't see true bar-less San Merah much now.

looks like a "super red rose"... either way, I'll take 8 of them and be set. i'm a sucker for a brown-based red THAT red. who do I have to sleep with around here to get that?

It is a beautiful fish, kind of reminds me of the picture in my Avatar.

looks like the one in the Shanghai show. It's the old line blue head san merah. In China this line is still maintained and is becoming more scarce in recent few years.

VSS, do you know of a website where the fishes entered in that show are shown?

My guess would be no Pat, unless the pictures were taken some time apart. The first pic seems to have a lot more red in the dorsal to me.

I agree its not the same fish, the first fish was from a competition last month in Shanghai, and the one above was from a competition in 2010 it looks like.

Same sort of sponge filter in the tanks that's for sure lol. Look like to be similar lineage but different individuals.
