I see wrigglers can fell in the gap and the parents can't scoop them back..

Allwin has a good point there, i would just use a piece of pvc that does not have holes drilled in it and i would put a cap on the top.

Oops forgot the description. .. I purchased the pre cut 22nd pic pipe for $4 and a 2x3 pvc floor drain for like 2 and change I removed the metal screen that was attached by 2 screws on the bottom of the floor drain being it was metal even though it was stainless steel why take a chance than I drilled 4 ...1/2" holes for a couple of reasons 1 being it works as a really cool feeding tube for any dry food or especially live black worms it becomes a fun challenge for the discus to play than I sanded the top smooth to prevent any damage to the fish from rubbing against it...2-the holes allow the cone to sink very quickly and provide for drainage when removing. now lastly I simply just inserted the pvc tube I to the base WITHOUT glue there is no need to it holds strong enough. One last thing I would like to thank John Nicholson for giving me the idea of using PVC....

Agree with the others, ditch the holes and put a cap on the top.

So, I tried the PVC thing too... my discus didn't take to it and went for glass. I think it was the stability of it... it moved around too much which I guess why you drilled the holes. I eventually used it as a pleco cave and got a ton of baby plecos.

I also eventually just ordered pleco caves and discus cones from barb too...

I use the pvc pipe and have 10mm glass silastic on the bottom and don't have any trouble. Those holes are no good in those. Mine stop about 2" from the top of the water level and when going for attachment I just drop the water so they don't end up down the pipe.

Ok...Very Very good points I will make adjustments as far as holes yes they were for stability I can either screen over the holes and use those dollar fine very fine mesh filter bags the ones they use for media to cap the top and use suction cups on the base for stability. Or better yet ditch the hole idea all together and fill with water 5th an cap the top....I'LL BE BACK with a re-design...
TO BE CONTINUED. ..

Careful not to nicholson this deal ('nicholsoning' is a term used, mostly here in the metroplex, to describe any situation where more time, money and effort is spent on an alternative "cheaper" solution than would have been spent on the original standard solution). ;)

Think I would just hit up Barb up for some pro equipment.

How about using a clay flower pot?

Hey guys don't think I'm being cheap because I'm FAR from cheap...remember I'm the one who installed a standby generator in the first 2 weeks in the hobby strictly as a precautionary measure should I loose power...I don't know who "barb" is or even how to get a hold of him I checked both ebay and amazon prior to making my own I don't want any of you guys think I'm penny pinching I just want the best for my discus and after last week's FIRST spawn I guess I got a little excited and wanted to get a breeding cone in the tank ASAP

Barb is a SimplyDiscus sponsor who hand makes breeding cones and other things.

Oh I also checked home depot for clay flower pots and most of them I felt were too short meaning they had no height to them and lastly I wasn't sure if the we're 100% clay or if they were just
"painted" to look like clay leaving me unsure to add something that can potentially become toxic to my discus. So I aired on the side of caution...rather than getting "blasted" for doing something dangerous in my tank

LOL.....I also use cones but have used PVC for a very long time. Here is how I do it. A 4 X 6 inch piece of tile, 2 inch PVC, and a little silicone....

I use PVC as well. Not as pretty as cones, but effective, and cheap. I think for a bit over $6 I made 10 or more of these...Bill

Very similar to the one I made. I used a 4"x4" tile, the 2" pvc pipe, a pvc adapter that goes from 2" to 4", filled it with aquarium stones, capped it, and used aquarium sealer around cap and where adapter meets the tile. Works great.

cap on top and bottom filled with gravel so it does't float.
