You ought to, Pat. I dont like to see a discus suffering of starvation. Add a drop of Levimasole in the BW if you didnt.

Rick

Rick, are we gut loading the worms to make them safer for the fish or a delivery mechnism to medicate the fish? Worms arrived tomorrow.

Fish started taking the seafood mix this morning Woot :D

CrazyAngels
11-12-2012, 07:32 PM
Sounds like a great way to get metro into the juvie's by loading up the worms. Pat, I'm still hopeful that all your work will not be in waste. Your doing an awesome job.

Second Hand Pat
11-12-2012, 07:59 PM
Thanks George but it is the meds which is is hurting the appetites so metro is not needed for the fish hence my post to Rick :)

So here is a rather odd question. The worms came and the fish have no clue. Now the batch A fish go yum. I have one batch A cull and thinking about adding it in with the contest fish to show them how to eat the worms. Strange idea??

Alfredo Llecha
11-13-2012, 05:35 PM
Well Pat, you are aware that the things could be worse if cross contamination between both groups. I have the same problem that I solved mixing worms plus food mix they are used to feed, may be it could work for you if the fishes of your batch B are still feeding.

Second Hand Pat
11-13-2012, 06:03 PM
Yes Alfredo, fully aware of this and why the batch A cull if it serves it's purpose will not be returned to the batch A tank.

Dogvet06
11-13-2012, 06:09 PM
i think its worth a shot ..i mean what do u have to lose but what do i know ;) seems like when mine see one go for the food they all swarm in..its cool how they signal to each other.

Second Hand Pat
11-13-2012, 06:25 PM
Here is how I look at it Jaimie. If I do not get them eating reasonable well they are really not worth the effort so as far as I am concerned I have very little to lose and perhaps much to gain.

Dogvet06
11-13-2012, 06:36 PM
i agree... ur throwing in a cull anyway and they came from the same mom and both parents are from same initial tank so i dont see how much harm this will do.

CrazyAngels
11-14-2012, 03:25 PM
Go for it Pat, sounds like that may give them a jump start by seeing the behavior of the cull eating the worms. best of luck and sure hope it works as indeed it's worth the shot.

Thanks Brandon, there are definitely a lot more broken bars in these batch then in batch A. I can only say that the father of these guys had one broken bar and he seems to have passed it to his progeny.

So my observations with these guys now that they are eating is they have put on some length but I see them putting on a bit of height and they are really bulking up. Hoping that stored energy goes to significant improvement in these guys.

Pat, the beautiful faces, with the hint of mystery added to the body decor, with those strip hidden red eyes. Something that is missing from the color intense varieties of discus. There is that sense of wildness, the natural chameleon type of ability to camouflage themselves under the fallen branches, and such. That is nature's reason for the body strips, I would guess. I would like to wonder, if I may, how much can the environment surrounding these fish effect their coloration? We see most discus change density of color, light to dark, deeping of color tints. When I feed my discus live foods they become vibrant, intensifying edge colors on fins, and body tones.
Beautiful discus you have there, congratulations.

Raising out wild fry to adulthood is something few here have done, and many of those that have note slower growth rates often. Theres also a bit of difference IME in their development and shape.... Keep up the good work with these guys... You may be surprised in the end how they turn out.:)

Well guys, I thought I was on the road to success with these guys but alas it was not meant to be. This past weekend I noticed red worms hanging out of the bottoms of the batch A F1 Tefes and after talking to Al it is Camallanus :( I decided I needed to treat all the F1s including the contest fish after seeing one of the red worms on the tank bottom. :( I treated with flubendazole (UK wormer) and I lost one of the contest fish and another looks iffy to me leaving me with three fish. I will need to retreat in three weeks.

So instead of dragging this out with now substandard fish it is time to cull what is left and call it a day. :( I tried really hard to make this work but seems it was not meant to be. I keep reminding myself that I am very new with this fry rearing especially with F1 wilds.

I will say I learned alot being a contestant and I hope to be part of future contests. I also wish the best for the remaining contestants. There are many nice contest fish and I look forward to watching them grow into amazing adults.

Thank you for sharing with us the good things and bad, is always easy to brag about it , when things are going fine, but it takes a real hobby/breeder to share the bad moments as well.
You take care and keep doing what you do especially with wilds . Simply definately needs you.

Thank you for sharing with us the good things and bad, is always easy to brag about it , when things are going fine, but it takes a real hobby/breeder to share the bad moments as well.
You take care and keep doing what you do especially with wilds . Simply definately needs you.

Julian.

Thanks Julian, this experience has definitely taught me alot. The first spawn Batch A was so easy and I was expecting a cakewalk with Batch B. As we all know that did not happen. One setback after another. Taking the contest fish and adding them back with their siblings is a last ditch effort but we shall see if anything good comes from it.

Pat, I haven't been around much lately (in and out from time to time) and stunned. Sorry to hear. At the same time, everyone on here knows you'll bounce back for the next one. It really sucks after the time and effort put into it but you've got the brains and experience as well as the proof with other groups. I'll be rooting for you woman!

AGAIN I COMMEND YOU FOR ALL YOU'VE DONE WITH WILDS AND IN MANY CASES TURNING QUITE A FEW INTO WILD KEEPERS.

TAKE CARE AND HOPE ALL TURNS OUT OK.

Pat, congratulations on putting in the effort on attempting this. As Al said, raising offspring from Wilds is not an easy task. I've also battled with the same parasite along with other worms and it's taught me plenty. Thank you for taking the time in showing us.

Thanks Shawn, like you this batch has taught me plenty and yes, I have had very similar issues and perhaps results as you...ie smaller fish. Your fish do seem to have done better then mine however.

The contest fish were not hit with the same parasite, but I did run into another issue that required the use of PP. The little guys do take a huge hit that early in their lives.

Second Hand Pat

Shawn, I have found that PP does not inhibit the fish's appetite like some of the meds do.

I agree, but the illness hit them hard before I could make a solid decision on treatment. They were off their feed for a few days and I reduced temps in fear of a bacterial attack. My lack of experience there was evident. I was not able to find anything in the scope.

Shawn, I suffer from that too...lack of experience and why a contest like this will mature us as discus keepers and hobbyists.

I read a remark in one of the other contestants thread which frankly made me mad and I do not get mad easy. I entered this contest for the fun and to do something a little different with raising wild F1s. I was already raising one batch of F1 from egg and figured raising the fish for the contest would be a cakewalk. That do not happen. I had issues from the get go and after seven or so months and down to three fish I withdrew from the contest.

My experience proved Al's point that raising eight fish is not easy, requires a lot of commitment and really a love for the hobby to be successful. I entered the contest with the full, honest intent of seeing it through, enjoying the experience and hopefully having one or two nicely spotted fish at the end.

I did not withdraw the fish for selfish reasons but felt I had nothing left to work with so if that leaves me with issues so be it.

Pat

That is no good to hear you done well to get the wilds to breed and raise sucessfully. I had a similar senario not long ago a great pair of pigeon SS had the fry at 5 weeks going great around 70 fry and then a heater controler malfunctioned 50C so 122F in your scale left with 3 now none....................... It is a learning curve and ways to improve and processes. atm the weather is too warm and the water temp with no heater is around the 30c - 86 which is touch high for any spawns for the time. Frustrating as I got buyers waiting just need to get rolling........................

Pat, I have not had a chance to read any other contestant's posts, so I'm not sure what the context is, but I can relate. I'm sure you've seen the barrage of pressure I've had to face on my thread, and I know the feeling of being misunderstood. If it's one thing I've learned from this contest, is that some folks really do have it hard on anyone outside of their elite circle.

With that said, I can tell from your posts that you are an alright gal, and until now, we've not directly addressed one another's posts. You can tell a lot from ones character based on how they carry themselves, even on the Internet.

Keep your head high, because my gut tells me you are above those that sling frivolous accusations.

That, and you attempted a HARD one raising Wilds. I've raised a few batches of fish from 1", but I can't imagine even getting wilds to breed.

Shawn, I am mighty impressed with the way you have handled yourself regarding the pressure applied in your contest thread. You are willing to see it through until the end. It takes alot of character to continue, most would have thrown in the towel. I wish you and your spouse the best on your upcoming little one. Parenthood is the best :D. I know, been there, done that.

About the thread, I have people PM me giving me a lot of support, and I have to admit, they are the ones that I'm doing this for. That's the least I can do to give back to SD.

Hi Pat,
From what I have read you have given much sound advice and opinions on these forums. We all admire someone who knows when to throw in the towel and regroup, look at the situation, refigure and execute a new and revised staggery. This type of individuals usually succeed with long term goals. I have not read the post that is being referred to but from my own readings from past posts of yours, which I have found to be sound, informative and non condescending, you do not need to put someone down to make a point. Your identity here is based on experience, and solid knowledge. I have found wolf packs on these forums that seem to rip or act as provocateurs with the sole purpose of procuring a position for superior identity. Don't let them get to you! I gather from your personal character you will succeed at what ever you endeavor.

Thanks Coree (hope I got that right) :o

Raising the fry of wild discus seems to be a bit more tricky than with domestic fry and I am looking forward to future attempts. I do not give up easily but there comes a time when you are left with little to work with it is best to reaccess the effort involved and with this batch it was best to quit the insanity.

I try to help here on Simply based on my own experience and/or common sense. I see no need to knock others down but some do try my patience. :) I also tend to walk my own path but not afraid to seek the advice of more knowledgeable folks. Especially with wilds and I am far from an expert.

Tough sitting here not knowing a lot of these terminology and acronyms. I had to look some up (Google) like TDS, TSS, RO and a whole lot more across the forum, shows the Newbie in me....
Is their a list or text file on this forum where I can copy these Acronyms and fish high tech words for future reference?
