View Full Version : Connecting water aging barrels

I have 4 55 gallon barrels that I want to use for aging water. I want to connect 3 to use for tap water and will use the other to connect to an existing RO barrel. Has anyone ever connected barrels? I would like to only use 1 pump to draw the water from all the barrels to my tanks without moving the pump from barrel to barrel.

Any suggestions on how to do this?

I use 1" uniseals with 1" pvc pipe to connect my 3 55 gallon drums. I use 2 valves and a union between each drum so I can isolate or remove one is needed.

1 1/2inch pvc. a elbow, a tee, a couple female threaded on one side couplings and a male threaded on one side coupling, some unions and some 1 1/2 pvc a shut off if you want.

Not made yet, just what I am going to do.

?, Do you want a shut off valve between these Barrels? This would allow you to fill one barrel at a time and you could use the barrel with the oldest water in it?

You can do that Mark. I think if you are always running though 4 barrels of water it is a good idea to also figure out a way to fill one and have it overflow into the other barrels as well. But with them being round barrels, it would be hard to get fittings to connect each one at the top (about 6" below the rim). I was going to do that with mine because 3 of mine are more square which would allow me to connect PVC using standard 1" bulkheads. Brandon and I discussed this once before.

You could by syphon to next tank.

I guess to get it past the wife, I could tell her we'll save money on pumps and electicity and let gravity do the work.:idea2:

These are connected with bulkheads and PVC. I have one power head that pushes water from the barrel located on the right to the one on the left. In the left barrel I have a powerhead that pushes water upward to create a rotating current through the two. I have 1 jäger heater that heats both barrels.

Very nice done, up and out of the way. You just gave me an idea! Thank.

Now that is one great system Wes!! I have 3 barrels on the floor and its a pain because I use gravity to send it over to a 32 gal Rubbermaid Brute can and from there it gets warmed up and ready for my water change. I may have to try that setup on the next fish room remodel!

Just curious, how and how often do you clean those barrels?

Good Question, lets see what other people say. I normally does every 3-5 weeks.

So many great ideas!

Jim....kind of reminds of going to some Wineries! I've got a wall in the basement I could do that with if I could just get the kids stuff out of there! LOL! Right now I have to settle for about 18 SF of space.

That's a cool idea, but if all the barrels are the same size and you raise the two barrels on the left, won't you lose the storage capacity of them to avoid overflowing the barrel on the right? Seems like it would be easier to just put all barrels at the same level (although that wastes some water if you just pump out of one).
Maybe I'm missing something though.

You can also have all of them on risers. Put the plumbing underneath and put a external pump on the end . You will get all the water out since the pump will be lower than the barrels. Just remember to put a shut off valve on the end.
