The mother to those was a fire red but the father was the famous ring leopard from Chad. They have now gotten fry to the free swimming stage twice. They have a few wigglers that should start swimming today but they have eaten most of them. Once it warms up a little I plan on putting this male in heaven......I currently have 10 females from this cross. I am going to setup some of them in their own tanks and put the malein just long enough to get business taken care of......LOL.

John, how are those cobalt spawn coming along?

John_Nicholson
03-06-2014, 04:57 PM
Doing great. I pulled approximately 60 - 65 from the pair and they spawned back again yesterday. If they keep it up I might have to give them their own tank. Right now I am just sliding in a glass divider when they get wigglers. I know that they lose a few babies to the other fish. I have not measured the babies but I would guess them to be 3/4 to 1 inch now.

I thought it was sarcasm. At any rate troll, sarcasm, or whatever....I find them to be absolutely incredible fish. Some of the most "Classic" looking blues I've seen in many many years. They remind me a lot of the classic Cobalts and Ocean Greens. And Chad's pigeon line is my favorite PB line I've seen in the same number of years. So any with his fish's blood in it I love, those pigeons you have right there John are amazing. Owning some PBs like that is my next venture I think. Still have the photo of the little ones Chad brought to NADA 12 hanging on my wall.

Negativity aside, I'd like to hear more about them John. Are these an old strain that you're trying to work with? They are reminiscent of some of the old school cobalts from years ago.

Thanks everyone.

Ryan they are some that Kraig brought in. I know I will butcher the name but some of the Wannabe's. A fellow down here bought them but never got a spawn. I worked pretty hard on them over the last several months and am having a little success. I have 5 that I raised artificially. They are roughly 5 - 6 weeks old and a solid 1 1/2 inches and are looking great. I have roughly 60 -65 that are roughly 4 weeks old. I would guess them over 3/4 of an inch and growing well. I will be keeping lots of these for myself. They are not perfect fish but have some good traits and have GREAT genetics. Give me 18 months and I think people will be blown away by what I grow out.

I remember us talking about them in another thread now. These are the ones that have improved their hatch rate with each successive spawn, right?

I think if the fry are a bit rounder and carry the colors of the parents, they're going to be killer fish. ;)

Give it a rest buddy... Are you seriously posting here again. Didn't your mother ever teach you that if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all?

Where are your pictures? What are u keeping that is so great?

John is well respected around here and has some very nice fish. He always provides feedback and helps people out.

Hopefully this will be our last post and the last we hear from you. Unnecessary.

I can appreciate this, you posted your opinion, came back, stood by it. And I can see it from your perspective - those aren't show fish quality and most of us might expect John to have top notch stock.

In this particular case, these fish are fairly unique and as has been posted being breed for certain strain traits, they won't be going to any shows but the folks that have them can be counted on one hand.

Maybe consider basing your opinion on overall fish through the years and not a particular pair or fish?

LOL...you guys are killing me....

The genetics that this pair carry are not really available in this country. Hell they maybe the only cobalt pair here that is 100% Watanabe. That is what is significant about them. Back in 2010 when we had the killed drought I shut down the fish house and sold all my stock. I am still in the process of getting back where I should be. I have also felt that I can breed/grow out better fish than I can buy. That is not a knock on anyone that I have bought fish from. Hell some of them I have known for 20 years and I consider dear friends but think of all the stress a fish goes through when you buy one. Most ( not all ) of the really nice fish that people of seen pictures of were fish that I had raised. Now this is not guppies....with discus it takes several years to get where you need to be....but give me a couple of more years and check in again. Also the camera angles did not do this fish any favors. The male in particular is better than shown.

If you have enough, save me some fry, I would like to use them to breed into my Watanabe turq x Contest Ss (this cross should yield some cobalts as well, would like to breed these cobalts with your cobalts eventually).
