Interesting story. I am not trying to draw any conclusions just putting down what I know about this situation and let the discussions begins....LOL.

This pair was brought in by Kraig and one of my buddies down here bought them. I believe they were already adults when they arrived here in the states. My buddy had them 1 1/2 to 2 years so who know what their age might be. He could never get them to raise any fry so eventually I bought them. After a couple of months in my care I caught them spawning. I quitely waiting and after an hour or so they stopped so I eased up to the tank and put a cover over the cone....man was I shocked when I turned the cone around and there were no eggs.........

Now I have seen this before with really old females and all you can do is to provide the best care you can and see what happens. Over the next 6 weeks we progressed to laying eggs but they would not stick to the cone and then finally healthy eggs on the cone and male they always made his runs......over the next several weeks they would spawn weekly but never had more than 10 wigglers. I finally pulled a few to raise myself and decided that the pair was just too old to make it happen. The female only lays maybe 100 eggs and the male seemed to be lacking.....

Well when everyone was over here for the get together they were spawning and I told everyone not to worry about it because of all of the above reasons....well if you click the picture below and watch the short video you will see things have improved. The question is why. My buddy has had discus a long time and has successfully raised babies before? The main difference that I know of is I feed much more BH then he does but does that in itself explain anything? Lots of people on here feed prepared foods and raise loads of babies...so what does the masses say?

Getting difficult pairs to spawn is easy...all I have to do is sell them to Bill and within a week they're getting busy. There's a lot to be said for plenty of good food and water however.

Maybe your beefheart tastes better than discus eggs and fry. And your overfeeding keeps their bellies full.

Wait……you're feeding them blind squirrel nuts?

My guess is a combination of age and food. At their advanced age preprocessed food just was not cutting it. I could easily be wrong but it is the only guess that I have, but I do not know the temp that my buddy is keeping his fish in so it could be a valid issue also.

P.S. Thanks Rick....

While that is probably the correct answer, the more logical answer is that the fish in your care knew death was pending and naturally tried to reproduce to continue the lineage.

Naw, I think the REAL answer is, seeing how John doesn't have any plants in his tank, they got bored and didn't have anything else to do. Either that or they seen the look in his Dachshunds eyes.
