Hello fellow SD friends. I have what I hope is an easy question. I use sponge filters exclusively and everything is going fine. My question is this. I currently attach Lee's discard-a-stones directly to the inside air nipple as shown in the picture. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/13/u4uzumem.jpg
I am wondering if the sponge filter would be more effective if I attach a small piece of airline tubing instead to get the diffuser farther down the central shaft to create more pull?
Is my water chemistry right?

I attach a small piece of tubing in the hope of creating more draw. I am drawing that conclusion from the days of using an under gravel filter years ago.

Correct, adding a piece of hose will make it far more efficient. The farther the bubbles have to travel the more water will be drawn through the sponge
Hope this helps.

Skip. Is there a way to extend the air hose beyond the normal connector at the top? Or is their another connector on the bottom side?

Thanks guys. Looks like I will be adding airline tubing tomorrow. Hopefully I am home again because of the snow.

Just cut a piece of tubing to extend it down as far a you want, then attach air stone if desired..........

I took mine out today and took it apart. It has a tube built in that runs to the bottom of the filter.
I have one on each end of the tank about 2 inches from the back and 2 inches from the side. Interestingly, most of the poop collects on the back side of the sponge in the corner, out of sight and easy to vacuum.

I have a brand that's like that. The more common brand, the Hydro's,dont have that tube running thru them.

Double thanks!!! The sponge efficiency was bothering me, but didn't think about lowering the effective bubble depth.
Cheers,
