I have many kinds of discus at this time but my favorites (please don't tell my other discus!LOL) are the rafflesias. I want to know who and when was this type of discus developed. Hope someone can give me the answer.

Of course they have to be pigeon blood based, I am just wondering when did they come into the hobby and if anyone took credit for this type of discus or was it just a gradual extension of Pigeon Blood lines with an enhanced red coloring?

This is a question for Rick. I wonder if they used the checkerboard pigeon to achieve that pattern.

I'm pretty sure they're pigeon bred with thicker lines...I love my Raffies and they're tied with my albino whites for my favorite domestics - they look really cool together too.

Rafflesias are named after a huge meat-eating plant in Southeast Asia; four feet in diameter and mostly red with white pattern.

Not sure if you knew or not but Rafflesias are named after a huge meat-eating plant in Southeast Asia; four feet in diameter and mostly red with white pattern. Yes, I know they were named after the plant Rafflesia. I have four of them. Two type 1 and two type II. They share a tank with four fire reds from Hans. They are beautiful together. How big are your rafflesias. Mine have grown to five inches in very little time. I just got them late December.

I have two that I bought at ~4.5" last Fall and are now close to 6"...they're both timid fish for some reason but they're healthy and growing.

It was originally developed by a Malaysian breeder called Lim Thean Aik. It's already there since 2007 or even earlier, and it used to be only supplied to Japan in the early days as far as i know.

Rudustin, what do you feed your fish and what lighting do you use to get that red color? Anything else special that you do? I have several red types from Hans that do not look like that. Currently, I suspect it is the lighting.

I also feed the Fire Reds, which are from Hans, and the Rafflesias Al's FDBW with bio enhancer and of course the tank they are in is painted black in the background which I think makes the red pop out visually. Although, The fire reds and the rafflesias have great color in general. The Rafflesias are more red and the Fire Reds are a very orange red.

Hi Elliots,

I can vouch for Rufus that it is not the lighting. I had a Rafflesia type I in my tank with an LED bar only and it was as red as can be. The fish is just simply amazing itself!

If someone can tell me how to attach a picture, I can show you the one I had:)

Not quite true... Its not a meat eating plant..Its a plant that attracts flies to it so they can pollinate the flower...It does that by smelling like dead rotting meat...

Rafflesia

Flowers of plants in the genus Rafflesia (family Rafflesiaceae) emit an odor similar to that of decaying meat. This odor attracts the flies that pollinate the plant. The world's largest single bloom is R. arnoldii. This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds. R. arnoldii is a parasitic plant on Tetrastigma vine, which grows only in primary rainforests with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It does not photosynthesize, but rather uses the host plant to obtain water and nutrients.
