Skip, I've been curious about the sponge filter that you use, because' it's so much smaller than the ATI sponge filter that I use. Can you tell me what size elite sponge filter that would work well in my 65 gl tank? I can't find this info online! Kris

Kris, just get two of the larger ATI sponges and call it a day.

Anybody have thoughts on the double sponge filter setup ? Good, bad or indifferent ?

As in running two sponge filters George? I would consider that better then one...more air and filtration.

This is the very rare time I disagree with Skip. If your tank is cycled the sponge inside your HOB filter should only be cleaned in tank water but if it is your prefilter sponge it is OK to rinse in tap water. If you are using your sponge as a filter only then clean in tap water. I clean my prefilter sponges several times a week but the sponge inside my HOB filter I clean once every week or two.

No and my apologies for being a little vague Pat. I was referring to the pic below. I've seen them but didn't think it would be that much better since it's only one air source. I too am always one for more air and filtration. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/23/umu6uje3.jpg

I was not suggesting use of these exact sponges for discus..

Elliot... this thread is old. Don't remember why I posted the pics.. other than bad filter.. good filter material

Yes Skip, you were demonstrating to me when to change a sponge on a sponge filter. I was hoping that the smaller elite sponge would be adequate for my discus tank, because I mistakenly thought that you used the smaller elite sponge filter in your discus tank......sorry, my mistake! Kris

Pat, I use a penguin 350 HOB, and one ATI size 4 sponge filter, in my 65gallon tank. I rinse my sponge filter, and 2 bio wheels in tank water, and I rinse my hob filter media in tap water. Do you think this is adequate? Kris

Kris, more then likely it is. What do the fish tell you? Are they happy, healthy and eating well?

I had 4 ATI 5 sponges in my tank.. MOSTLY.. because.. if I ever needed to have a seeded sponge ready to go.. I just pulled it out and set up new tank.. I felt it was nice to have extra sponges ready to go..

that was really only reason I had the extras..

ps.. kris.. john Nicholson has constructed a sponge filter similar to the elite filter in pics.. using pvc pipe.. WITH ATI 5 sponge material..
