Could anyone tell me is it a must to use a skimmer with a sump or can you get away without using one
Thanks

I don't think they do anything in freshwater.

I've read about this lately as someone else posed the same question. Some people have done it with differing results (most not great). I have three skimmers just sitting around, but after reading about it, I don't think it's worth the electricity and decided not to bother.

I don't see a purpose for a discus tank

I found them most effective in removing organic wastes, you can see the results after feeding, but are they worth the money today for fresh water, i would say not so, but if you have them lying around one running would not hurt, but then of course there is the added care and maintenance to the sump. Truthfully mine was up in my tank not in my sump, so how much organic wastes it pulls out of sump is something for someone who has one lying around to experiment with. My cat put an end to my skimmer long ago.
