1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?

Noticed hole in the Head start in 3 of my discus, started to hide when someone walked up to the tank

2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).

first 3 out of 8 discus showed signs of HinH, treated for HinH, after treatment all healthy but one discus that looks like fins are rotting away, only started happening after the treatment. also VERY thin but is eating, has pinched head but has had this since first had him, never had any problems.

3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.

Treated for Protozoal infestations (cant remember the chemical that was in it, long word but that's what it treats, HinH.)
used exactly the doses recommended, left in for 3 days, did not feed discus in 3 days. after the 3 days did large water change, fed discus twice, than redosed for another 3 days. did this 3 times. all holes healed up and 7 of the discus are happy as anything, eating, at the front of the tank all the time except one discus. looked healthy through the meds. one day after the meds fins started to rot and stayed by himself at the back of the tank, when food is put in tank he still comes up to eat. Don't know what to treat for next

Tank/Water

4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.

were in a 850L tank, until relocated the 8 discus into a 220L quarantine tank to get treated. still in 220L tank.
8 discus around 15 to 18cm. unknown ages

5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).

During treating for HinH water change every 3 days. after treatment, daily water change 50 precent (been 12 days since doing daily water changes) it only in these wter changes my one discus has started to rot, all other discus have recovered perfectly.

6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?

quarantine tank would of been running for 3 months before putting discus in for treatment

7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.

no, no ph swing (using co2 injection with ph controller to set ph to exactly 7

8. Parameters and water source;

Ph 7
tap water conditioned (has 5ppm ammonia in water)

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

- temp 32 degrees Celsius

- ph 7

- ammonia reading 0.5 (always between 0 - 0.5)

- nitrite reading 0

- nitrate reading 0.5

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

Just tap water

9. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.

No

10. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.
pictures will be in the next post

Are we just concerned now about the one fish with the fraying fins?

Are the fins still rotting or eroding?

It's not great having ammonia present in your tap water, do you change straight to tank or do you go via a storage barrel?

If you don't store the water, do you have anyway you can?

Looking at the fish, it does seem to be in poor condition, have you ever wormed these fish? If so what did you use?

Sorry for the questions. In the meantime I'd drop the temp down to no more than 28C, the high temps won't be helping here. I'd also consider adding salt @100grams per 100 litres just to provide a little support (it will help in osmo regulation for a short while).

peronsally I think the one on the right is way to far gone and should be euthanized. If the fish is eating you can try, but IME fish in that condition are way to far gone to be saved. Looks like it might have internal organs that are failing him. The other fish should gt a round of levanasol (wormer) as Paul suggested. I see these fish are in a QT tank, which is good, but what was the tank like in which they came from? It too will need to be treated or sterilized.

Also, I see you lower your ph with c02, are you doing that in your qt tanks as well?

the fins are rotting, getting worse and worse by day, my water is not stored as there is no ph swing, they have been living in the very small amount of ammonia for some time. and im sorry I made a mistake there, it usually around 0 to 0.5, I forgot the decimal, it has never ever been at 5ppm.

the stuff I have just treated them does protozoal infestations, one of them being a treatment for worms I believe

so do I, he is my fav due to being a beautiful yellow. he is eating well so I think im just going to keep trying but I don't think he will ever look as good as he used to. im at the stage where if it should be a cull or not.

im guessing since I am treating for HinH, which is caused by a protozoal infestation, could he been that much infected that his organs where depending on it, that when I treated his organs just cant cope? this a possibility? would this cause the rotting on fins? he also now turning white in some places

yes I am using co2 injection as well in the qt tank, would this cause much with the meds? im guessing not since all my other discus are doing great :)

Matt,
Could you please post pics of your other discus? Also bare with me on the CO2 injection, but how much CO2 are you injecting? Whats your pH without it?
