View Full Version : Red Cuipuea and Tefes from Mark

Second Hand Pat
03-01-2014, 02:30 PM
This is the red Cuipeua I got from Mark the other day. There were only three to choose and I did not get the "most red" one. I choose this as it appears to have the most male attributes. Also from the picture it has hints of striations in the body. This should be a interesting fish to watch as it matures.

So here is a video of the QT; there are six fish in the tank. Besides Mauro's Cuipeua pair (the most red), there are two Tefe, one red Cuipeua and a female Trombeta. The QT is a 75 with a AC 110, large sponge and an extra airstone.

So if you have a pair who want all the food how do you get food to everyone. Add an AC 110 and add some FDBW cubes to the overflow which places single worms in the water column and everyone eats.

Is my pair the greedy one? If so, sorry for the problems they are causing :)

Second Hand Pat
03-05-2014, 12:57 AM
Nope, the cubes are placed on the water surface where the overflow hits the surface and the water flow from the filter rolls the cubes releasing the worms. You can see it in the video right at the beginning.

Very nice new video, Pat. Thanks for posting. I was wandering if you got the sexes right. The male is the Cuipeua that appears in the beginning of the video, which then moves to the back of the tank. The video then focuses on the female (larger) Cuipeua. Which one you say is displaying the bars? By the video, I understood that it was the female, but I might be wrong.

Mauro, then the female is the one with the straighter striations and showing her bars? If so then I have them backwards which makes for some possible interesting developments.

Yes, that is correct. Before seeing them spawn, I thought the larger Cuipeua with stronger vertical bars from the middle to the back of the body was the male. But she is the female, as you can see in the video of the only spawn of this pair that I got on tape:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6oXDHGq-Zw

The female is the fish that makes the first run in the cone. When she is in breeding mode the bars from the middle to the back of her body become stronger.

Yes my Greens have grown about 1/2 an inch. Their curiosity with objects and new items in the tank is totally fascinating. I will hide in the hall and peek into the room, but some how they know I am there even though I am not in the line of vision. They are getting big and yes they are in a QT tank with tap water. They are true hunters, and will try to move dead wood just to see what is under it.

Marnie, it is quite varied; a flake mix from Kens fish, Bills SBH flake, live white worms and red wigglers, frozen brine and mysis shrimp and Al"s FDBWs.

A little video to show the guys left in QT. The two Tefe's moved on to live with the Tefe group. The Trombeta and Cuipeua will move once the big tank is clean and fish there are fully recovered.

Mauro, your pair is doing great. They will be getting an small amount of RO water this weekend.

Thank you for one more cool video, Pat. You are right, the pair looks great. The colors and striations of the male are really showing up. Keep us posted and thank you again for taking care of them.

Will do Mauro, the TDS is down to 155 from about 190. Let's see if we can woo the female.

What size are your green spotted tefes?. Did they come already with the spotts when you bought them?

They did but they are not large fish, about 5 to 5.5 inches. They are also still growing.
