View Full Version : Very bad water for discus?

Hello,

the tap water where I live is very hard, with the following parameters:
PH=8.1
GH=17
KH=22
Would it be okay for Stendker discus?

I think it's probably not, but unfortunately I cannot get a RO system installed where I live, and I cannot regularly buy RO water because stores selling it are very far. So I've been looking at other ways to decrease KH GH and PH, but am not sure what to do.

Thank you so much for any advice.

Best wishes

Your water hardness doesn't matter ph not really either. What matters is that your ph remains a consistent number. You can achieve that by aging water for your water changes. Unless you're breeding you don't need soft water.

Your water is very similar to mine, just a tad harder tought my ph is 8.2. My discus do very well, all they need is a lot of clean water every day and constant parameters.

This is very good news, thank you both!

You only need to age the water if the ph changes within 24 hours of being put into the tank with heat and aeration. Otherwise tap water the same temp as the tank and dechlorinated with prime or safe is good.

Larry,

Are you able to hatch and grow out fry in that hard water?

Yes I am my tds is 500 to 550 my PH is 8.5 and I get a 75% or better hatch rate been doing it for years no problems that is why I always recommend trying your tap water before going to RO water.
