Hi All, considering implementing an automated light controller. With daylight savings coming what are your typical lighting regimes? Currently I turn on around 7am and off around 10pm...not sure if this is hurting anything but it's time to figure it out.

The fish don't care. Use what is convenient for you.

7am to 10pm is very long period for lights to be on. It may cause an algae problem. I just use a timer to switch on my light automatically from 4pm to 10pm, but i am growing mostly low light requirement plants, such as anubias and crypts and java ferns and moss.

I have 2 tanks that have light 24/7 and no algae problem. Good housekeeping and water changes prevent that. The only case you have an actual requirement is if you have plants.

Interesting I would have suspected some impact on the fish one way or the other. I think given this I'll have the light on from 7am-10am and again from 6pm to 9pm....mainly my viewing times.

Do those of you who do not leave the lights on have natural light keep your tank lit?

I have my tanks ( 2 ) on timers set from 8am to 11am this allows me to feed then clean uneaten food and crap, then snack lunch with just ambient daylight from room, then from 6pm to 11pm to again feed clean up and enjoy my fish during the evening. My fish are young from 3 months in the grow out tank to 6-7 months in the larger tank. I'm retired but you can set up a time schedule that suits you and allows you to do maintenance. I find that during the day without anyone around and with the lights out there is quiet in the tanks and there is less competition and chasing because of the pecking order allowing the fish to grow better.
Have a nice day.

My lights are on from 7 am to 7 pm.

Sometimes I think the lights going off calms the fish.
