Thought I'd put the below filtration in place for a fully stocked (tbd) lightly planted 240g (72*24*31) discus display tank. I will have either a 3d background or a slimline attached to foam a few inches from the back to hide all of the equipment. I plan on doing 25% water changes every other day.

Eheim Pro 2280 for bio, mechanical, chemical. http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-supplies/aquarium-filters/eheim-pro-iii-2080-canister-filter-media.html

2-3 sponges for additional mechanical filtration.

Would this filtration be adequate?

Would I need a nice air pump like this one for running the sponges + a couple of air stones or would it be fine with something less expensive?

Thanks in advance.

I have the alita 6A for my 120 and I love it. It's super quiet and with the manifold that you can buy with it, the pump can run about 12 stones. Currently running 8-10 stones on it and could easy add more.

I have the same set up running seven air stones for my K1 moving bed filter in an sump. Very quite and power to spare .

I would go with the eheim 2262 instead of the 2080. The 2262 can hold more media and is a better over all filter than the 2080 imo. I have owned both filters and I would never by another 2080.

Thanks Dave. Is the 2262 super quiet as well?

It is to me. I have it running in our living room and never had any issue with the noise with the 2262 you can add foam to the cover and it will make it even quieter .
