I have collected some beautiful rocks with gems, such as amethyst, citrine etc., that would look beautiful in my show tank. The question is.....can they be harmful to my discus? They don't react to the vinegar test! Kris:confused:

They should be fine if they passed the vinegar test. I've had some amethyst in tanks from time to time.

skip the vinegar and use the nitrate solution (from your test kit) its the nitrate #2 bottle I think. Much stronger than vinegar and can detect much better, a stone that passed the vinegar test one time went in my tank and ph went up, I did the nitrate bottle test and got tons of bubbling. If they pass then throw them in.

Don't bother to test further. Both amethyst and citrine are a quartz which much aquarium gravel consists of.

Do they have sharp edges?

No sharp edges... And they passed the nitrate test. Thanks to all for your advise!
