I have seen photos of Discus tanks with over head lights that give a lovely shimmering effect on the sand and fish below. Will some one say how this is done.

From what I have seen this is done with LED fixtures. They are much more customizable than your regular fixtures. Most have the sunrise/sunset feature as well, something that a few years ago was unheard of.

I have florescent fixtures with moonlights (LEDs) and I get a little shimmer at night but I do not think that is what you want. You have to look at all LEDs for that look.

I have a marineland LED fixture and you get that shimmer affect on the walls and floor both during the day and night. Would post pic but can't figure that part out. lol.

Lol. The easiest way is to sign up to a free host site like Flickr (https://www.flickr.com/) or Photobucket (http://s21.photobucket.com/). You then simply copy/paste the links provided here and voila! you have pictures. HTH

Metal Halides, Sunlight, or LEDs plus some surface movement. Thats all you need. I'd go with the LEDs though, bulbs last forever and they produce little to no heat at all in the room where as a metal halide is like using the oven and leaving the door open.

Ya I have led.s too. They are very nice. Especially with the moonlight option. I love it. Really shows up the different colors in the fish. Totally different look

I've got LEDs hanging from the ceiling on a dimmer switch, with an open top, and I get a good shimmer going, esp at night

LED lighting does the trick, I have Radion Gen2's and get that effect especially under the moonlight and sunrise functions, and you can program the lights for intensity as well as timing to come on and off, while ramping up and down like sunrise and sunset, and the percentage of light you want when you want it. Mine set up for 11 hours a day sunrise to sunset so I never have to mess with them whether I am here or not, but the fish can set in a routine like in the wild.

They acutally sell LED lights that have a "shimmer" affect..............

Belated thanks guys. I've got a natural pocket space in my apartment that just begged for an aquarium. It's 48"x48" base and not quite 36" high ~350 gallons... I struggled with the cost and effort of having the lighting installed, but I've gotten so much pleasure from my tank it's been worth it!
