I've been posting in the display tanks section until now but thought this is more appropriate because the fish are wild greens.

Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can dig out some full tank shots for you Marnie.

Len, the actual leaves you can see are Anubias. I did want a South American plant that was biotope correct and I tried Philodendron species but their leaves don't seem to survive under water. The wooden twigs you can see are silver birch twigs.

dm.67
03-25-2014, 03:27 PM
Thanks Guys.

Nick the tank is 200cm x 65cm x 65cm. I estimate that, when you allow for displacement and include extra volume from filters, it probably holds around 750 litres/198 US gallons.

Coree the background is by Back to Nature ( a Swedish company) and it is one of their Amazonas models.

They are Tefe's as far as I know have not gotten a reply yet from John as to the exact location. I will probably have to call him on it. His internet communications not always the fastest. They have grown about an inch in QT, and I have one who just will not eat flakes or BH, will only eat frozen blood worms, he acts and looks normal just fussy when it comes to food. Fussy eaters makes me think parasites, but we shall see.

If it is Tefe then it would be Rio Tefe as the collection point. Most wilds take a while to wean but IMO john fish take flakes and tetra bits pretty readily since I know he feed them tetra bits. The wilds I got from him most take flakes or tetrabit right off the bat.

Yes all except one took to flakes and bits and beaf heart, although BH is not their favorite. The one will actually not eat unless he gets his frozen worms, thanks for the location, Pat had mentioned they might be another green but John has not verified that, he had listed as Tefes. None of mine had been switched over to flakes and bits at the time of purchase, but all with the exception of one has now been switched. Stubborn little one.

Hi Jay, thanks for the compliments re the tank. The discus varied in price. I paid £80 ($133) each for the first lot, £95 ($158) each for the second lot and £110 ($183) for the final lot. Some of the nicest ones were actually £80. I have gone through a process of upgrading, so each new lot was slightly nicer over all, but individuals varied, so I kept the nicest of each batch and moved on some of the lesser fish to make space for new ones. I'm still going through that process as some of the £95 fish had good spotting but imperfect bars. I will move some of these on when I can get some really high quality Jutai Greens to replace them. They couldn't fish the Jutai this year as the water levels didn't drop enough. So I've got my fingers crossed for next year.

I have seen very nice tanks though the years, but I have to say this is just one of the most beautiful and natural tanks I have seen with discus. I keep going back to your pictures and every time I do I have the same reaction this is an awesome tank. The back ground is to kill for. What and how are you using filtration and heating?

What she said 100%. Keep the photos/videos coming and describe your setup in some detail. This is a thread I'll be watching.

dm.67

Thanks Len and Coree. I am really pleased that you like my tank so much, its lovely to hear that.

It looks nice but the heating and filtration aren't hitec, they are quite basic really.

The tank is 200cm x65cm x65cm. It has an opti white glass front, but the rest is ordinary glass I estimate that the tank plus filtration actually hold around 750 ltrs.

The lighting is TMC Aquaray Grobeam 1000ND LEDs. I've got 5 LED tiles and 3 LED strips with 2 controllers set to the sunset/sunrise effect. You can also set it to mimic lightning storms which does get a reaction from the fish. They tend to shoal more closely and move around the tank a bit more.

The heating is 2 visitherm 400 watt heaters.

The filtration is:
2 x Fluval FX5s
1 DD 39 watt UV steriliser
3 stage sediment filter, 25 micron> 5 micron> 1 micron which feeds into 2 x 6.5 ltr nitrate resin filters

I change my maintenance from time to time, but at the moment I do a 200 ltr water change every day, with a 400 ltr change once a week. I use HMA water that has also gone through a nitrate resin filter

I replace filter floss every 2 weeks and clean the top layer sponges every 2 weeks in both filters. I clean all other sponges and hard filter media every month. I alternate the filter cleaning, so one filters gets fully cleaned and the other on 2 weeks later.

Water chemistry:
PH 6.6 - 6.8
GH 2-4 dh
Nitrate 1-2 ppm
Amonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Temp 30 oc

Anything else you want to know just ask and thanks again for your interest and nice comments.

Hi Scott, I'm glad you like them. I got them in 3 lots over a period of 5 months. I first got 12 in October 2012. I then got another 6 in December 2012, but I moved a couple of the original 12 on to make space. I then got 8 more in February 2013 and again moved on a few of the ones I already had to make space. I've got 16 at the moment.

Da** that is one nice looking tank, again I am blown away, this is a good example of what a natural looking tank can achieve visually. Not saying this is a perfect bio type but it is what I would want in my home, five gold stars belong to you for this tank!

dm.67
04-13-2014, 02:02 PM
Cheers Coree. The main thing going against it for a biotope is the fact that I've got anubias along the top. I really want some type of South American plant that looks like some kind of tree creeper but the only thing I've come across that looks the part is philodendron, and it's leaves just die after a month or so when they are fully submerged. If I could find something South American that fitted the look of anubias and was OK submerged I would replace the anubias.

The fish are potentially correct but I can't say for sure. I did find an article on the intranet that stated Bleeding heart tetra's (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma) are found in the Jutai. Apart from the discus and BHs the only other fish in there are the bristlenose. These are just common bristlenose so I can't say for sure where the species originated, but I have seen pictures of an ancistrus species being netted in the Jutai alongside discus, that looks broadly similar. I did originally have some Jutai Red Splash tetra's (Copella vilmae) which are very rare, but these all died.

I've also got some amano shrimp around the back of the background to carry out some cleaning work, but as these aren't visible in the front of the tank I let myself off a little with them regarding the biotope theme.

I get the plant issue, it is just so hard to find plants dedicated to a specific region. Your tank is all the same, one of the best I have ever seen, and I have looked at a lot over the years. Truly this is what I would love to have going for me in my wild tank. You have given me a goal to achieve.

dm.67
04-13-2014, 02:31 PM
That's really nice of you to say so. It is always good to get responses like that from people who also like fish. I hope you achieve what you are after in the end and I hope it gives you as much pleasure as mine does to me.

dirtyplants
04-13-2014, 02:39 PM
It may take some time but I will do my best to achieve a tank much like yours. The back ground will have to be made from scratch I am afraid unless the company you got yours from ships over seas, and I can afford the expense. Thanks for the pleasure of viewing your tank and discus.
