UV sterilizer

I'm wondering if I should use a UV sterilizer for my discus tank. I have a algae problem at the moment because I'm just using a regular tube bulb. Would a sterilizer help cut back on algae? I know it would make the water clearer which would be nice but would it be over kill?

Do you use it for algae control or for bacteria. I think I'm just going to switch to a dimmer light and get a UV for bacteria. hopefully the algae goes down after a light swap
